Festive Celebrations & Christmas Wishes to All

At Burdett-Coutts, another week of Christmas Magic has flown by, where pupils have enjoyed a range of Christmas celebration events, including the PTA Winter Fair, Choir Performances at the Mayors Parlour and participation in a filmed Church Service to be screened in the New Year (we will let you know when), and finally a Carol Service at Norton House.

Our week concluded with a whole school Christingle Service in church 🕯 Phew, what a month it has been🎄

We would like to say a HUGE well done to all the children for an AMAZING Autumn term in school. You have all worked incredibly hard academically, socially and participating in school trips and wider school events.

You have also demonstrated determination and resilience with your studies, trying your best at all times; representing your school with your manners, kindness and respect for other when engaging in community events and projects in and out of school. We are all very proud of you – and you should be proud of yourselves too.

We also like to extend a HUGE thank you to our wonderful parents and carers. Your ongoing support with your children and their education, ensuring that they are in school each day, on time and ready for learning and always showing such positivity towards school life, is very much appreciated.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas 🎄and Happy Holidays over this festive period.  Please take care of each other, stay safe, enjoy time with family and friends, and make time for some much deserved rest 🙂

We look forward to seeing you all return to school at 08:40am on Tuesday 7th January 2025.

Our magical Christmas week

Christmas Carols at the Abbey Community Centre:
On Friday 13th December, the Club Choir visited the café at the Abbey Community Centre (now called The Wash House) in Great Smith Street. The children sang a programme of traditional carols, mixed with songs from our Key Stage 2 Nativity performance, while eight or nine children sang solos. We’ve been making this annual visit with our choir for at least twenty years!

Christmas Carols at the Mayor’s Parlour:
On Tuesday 17th December, at the invitation of Bi-Borough Music Hub, twelve children from the Choir Club visited the Mayor’s Parlour, on the nineteenth floor of Westminster City Hall. We sang carols before and after the Christmas meeting of the Loop Live council group. The panoramic views of Westminster from the café at the top of this very tall building are amazing, and the children spent the interval identifying various London landmarks; including the roof of our own school!

Choir Filming @ St. Stephens Church:
On the afternoon of Tuesday 17th December, the Choir Club participated in a filming session in St. Stephen’s Church with The Revd. Graham Buckle. An Epiphany Service was being recorded for broadcasting in early January, and the children sang We Three Kings of Orient. The TV producer was extremely complimentary about our performance, announcing himself happy with with our work after only two takes!

Christmas Carols at Norton House:
On Wednesday 18th December, the Choir Club, along with Year Six, visited local care home Norton House, located only a few minutes’ walk from our school. We sang a programme of traditional carols, and songs from our show (Sheik, Rattle & Roll) to the residents, who were very pleased and welcoming. This was another occasion where several children had the opportunity to sing their solos in public.

Burdett-Coutts Winter Fair:
A HUGE thank you to our extraordinary school PTA (Friends of Burdett-Coutts), for once again hosting another hugely successful school fund-raising event, our Winter Fair on Wednesday 18th December. I know many have dedicated hours in preparing for this event, and it showed in the wonderful range of games, food, music and entertainment for all, including a very busy🎄Santa’s Grotto. Those elves were sure kept busy supporting Santa 🎁 Thank you so much to all the parents, carers and other visitors who attended and supported this event. You helped to raise the magical amount of £1096.10 on this afternoon of Christmas cheer, laughter and music!

Christingle Service:
As is our tradition, we came together as a whole school to celebrate the end of term with a wonderful Christingle Service at St Stephens Church on Friday 20th December. The service included festive songs, readings and prayers, and we heard about the story of Jesus’ birth from Luke’s gospel with the reading from chapter 2 verses 1-16.

At the end of the service, the lights were dimmed and we lit our Christingles (being very careful of those around us!) and said the following special prayer:

As you have received this light, so remember that Christ is the Light of the World. Whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. May these Christingles remind us to shine as lights in the world, bringing light to those who walk in darkness.

If you are not sure what a Christingle is, and what each element represents, ask your child/ren – they should be able to tell you all about it!

A special message of thanks:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the amazing staff at Burdett-Coutts!

You are ‘simply the best‘ and give so much to ensuring our pupils have access to the most AMAZING opportunities and rich learning we can give. You have all  gone above and beyond throughout the term, and yet, amazingly, are still able to still find that extra sparkle ✨ that you gave to all the wonderful events we have hosted and presented this festive season🎄

On behalf of the School Governors, Trustees and myself, thank you for all you do, for your continued dedication, love and care for our pupils, families and wider school community. Please do enjoy a well deserved rest of the holiday season and enjoy many moments of joy and laughter with family and friends.

Wishing you all a healthy and happy New Year 🎉

Woof….

Happy Friday everyone!

And another EXTRA exciting week this has flown by – our school has been buzzing all week, with winter fairs, trips and visits and so much more.

The thing I have really enjoyed over the past few weeks is the constant sound of singing and music 🎶 within our school which accompanies so much of what take place here. It just makes me feel so happy and joyful 🐶

I have to say I think our choir pupils are amazing! On top of their normal school work schedule, they have completed 10 additional events this month – all of which they have proudly shone at 😊 Well done Burdett-Coutts Choir and Mr Carden of course. Now he is really is a magical person 🎶 creating and shaping opportunities and memories for so many people!

I know I am looking forward to some well deserved lazy holiday lie-ins, and catching up with friends and family. Plus all those extra yummy food treats😋 and long and muddy walks in the forest!

Whatever your plans are for the holiday season, please enjoy them and stay safe. And perhaps jump in at least 1 muddy puddle, it’s really so much fun 🐶

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and see you all in 2025 🎉🐶

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Preschool:

This week, our preschool children have been busy exploring their imagination and creativity in the home corner as Santa’s little helpers! They wrapped and unwrapped presents, checked the Christmas list, and even rode in the sleigh to deliver gifts. Through this festive role play, the children are building their communication and language abilities by engaging in conversations and storytelling, enhancing their physical development through fine motor activities like wrapping presents, and fostering personal, social, and emotional development as they collaborate, take turns, and share ideas.

We also had a wonderful time in the library with the Year 3 students for some partner reading. It was truly heartwarming to see our little ones sitting attentively and enjoying stories read by their older peers. This fun and engaging activity was a fantastic way to strengthen connections within our Burdett-Coutts community, while helping the children build confidence in their communication and social skills. We can’t wait to do it again!

Nursery:

This week in Nursery, we have been learning all about patterns and discovering how they repeat. The children explored this concept by using linking cubes to create their own pattern. They then practiced drawing the patterns they made, to reinforce their understanding.

Reception:

Reception has been reaching for the stars with their amazing space projects! The children brought in an array of incredible creations – from homemade rockets (including one big enough for children to climb inside!) to astronaut helmets that were truly out of this world. Each project showed so much imagination, effort, and creativity. It’s safe to say we have some future engineers and space explorers in our midst. A huge well done to all our budding astronauts!

Year 1:

Year 1 have been exploring nouns – of people, places, things, and animals! We went on a Noun Hunt around the school, spotting nouns everywhere, from teachers and classrooms, to pencils and pets. It was a fun way to see how nouns are all around us in our everyday world!

Year 2:

Year 2 has had a wonderful Autumn term, full of learning, creativity, and special moments. We explored exciting stories like The Lonely Beast and The Great Fire of London, which inspired our imaginations and deepened our knowledge. Trips to the Tower of London and King’s Gallery brought History and Art to life, with highlights including sketching royal portraits and using oil pastels to create our own masterpieces. The festive season was magical, with Christmas Display Day, where we represented Eight Maids A-Milking, Christmas Jumper Day, and when we had a delightful Christmas Lunch. We also collaborated with Year 1 and EYFS for a heartwarming Nativity Play, spreading joy through our songs and performances.

Adding to the excitement, a mischievous classroom elf visited us this week, making each day a little more special. We’ve also grown as a class, showing small acts of kindness and collaboration – such as including others in games, encouraging friends to persevere through mistakes, and brightening days with cheerful greetings, like saying, “Good morning, I hope you have a great day!”.

We ended the term with a cosy afternoon of hot chocolate, reflecting on the year and sharing our wishes for the year ahead. Thank you to all the parents & carers for your unwavering support throughout the term. We’re incredibly proud of the children’s progress and look forward to more adventures in the new year. Wishing everyone happy holidays and a wonderful New Year, from Miss Jorquera & Miss Polly.

Year 3:

Year 3 have been sharing their wonderful reading skills with our Preschool, where they spent time reading to the younger pupils in the library. We had so much fun reading with our new friends and enjoyed sharing our favourite picture books with them. We are also getting into the Christmas spirit. We have watched the story of The Nutcracker and have started making our own nutcrackers. We are so looking forward to spending time with family and friends over this break. Happy holidays from all of us in Year 3!

Year 4:

In the spirit of Christmas, we have created a variety of different art works. First, we made clay snowmen, where pupils modelled and constructed, before adding paint to create further features. They also applied drawing skills from their Art unit to draw a picture of The Grinch. Everyone enjoyed showcasing their artistic flair in both activities.

Year 5:

We’ve come to the end of a long and busy term which has been packed with many exciting events and learning tasks. We particularly enjoying learning about the Ancient Greek gods and goddesses and learning about the worship practices of the Ancient Greeks. Pupils have been maturely engaging in independent research on this topic, and there are plans to create water colour paintings of Ancient Greek heroes, which everyone is very much looking forward to. Wishing everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Year 6:

In English, we have been researching the life of Winston Churchill. We have also been learning about him in History, and were curious to discover how his early years shaped the leader that he become during WW2. Through our research, we discovered all about his family background, previous jobs and were shocked to discover that he a member of Parliament for over sixty years, before he passed in 1965.
