Out and About……

Monday 13th October: Year 4 Trip to the British Museum:

Year 4’s trip to the British Museum was an exciting exploration into the world of Roman Britain. We learnt From the archeological experts about the ideas that the Romans spread around Britain after they left in 411 AD. We looked at real artefacts that are kept in the Museum, from the Winchester Hoard of jewellery to Stone Age clay pots. Make sure to ask us about all the different foods that we wouldn’t have if it weren’t for the Roman – we can certainly name plenty!

Woof…

Happy Friday everyone. It’s hard to believe that next week is our last week of school before the Autumn (October) Half-Term holiday!

It has been another busy week in school, with lots of activities taking place in and out of classes.

I was lucky enough to visit Year 6 several mornings this week. They’ve been busy completing a set of assessments, and were so focused and applied themselves really well to the tasks. I also tried my best and I was proud I remembered to wait quietly until everyone had finished.

Although I think I may have fallen asleep while waiting 🐶

I have also been out in the playgrounds – the weather has been amazing with no wet play which has meant we have all been out enjoying time to run about and play with our friends.

Last weekend I went to Forty Hall where the 🍁 autumn leaves were amazing and falling like gentle rain into the stream which I had lots of fun splashing about in 🐶

I have to share how intrigued I am as LOTS of boxes have been arriving in the KS2 playground. Along with the KS2 pupils, I can’t wait to see all the new layout and play equipment for the KS2 playground when we get back after the autumn Half-Term holidays 🙂

Have a great weekend and see you all on Monday.

ALERT: Spy Dogs books URL leading to inappropriate adult content

The Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster Libraries & Archives Service has alerted us that some editions of the children’s book series Spy Cats, Spy Dogs and Spy Pups by Andrew Cope, that include a reference to a former website for the series, has been taken over and replaced with inappropriate adult content.

This is not connected to the author or publisher but it’s important to be aware that the website should not be visited. Please also ensure that children do not visit it either.

At our school, we have throughly checked to make sure that we do not have any of these titles in our school library book shelves. And until the issue has been resolved, we will not be stocking these titles.

School & PE Uniform:

Please ensure that your children are wearing the correct school uniform to school each day. It is important that all pupils are also wearing the correct school shoes – which are black shoes, and not trainers.

The Autumn/Winter term uniform options for pupils in Nursery to Year 6 are:

Girls:

  • Dark grey trousers, skirt or skort
  • Long-sleeve white shirt (Years 3 – 6)
  • White school logo polo shirt (Nursery – Year 2)
  • Tie (Years 3 – 6)
  • V-neck navy school logo jumper (Years 3 – 6)
  • Navy logo school sweatshirt (Nursery to Year 2)
  • Blazer (Year 6 only)
  • Plain black shoes (not trainers)

Boys:

  • Dark grey shorts or trousers
  • Long-sleeve white shirt (Years 3 – 6)
  • White school logo polo shirt (Nursery – Year 2)
  • Tie (Yers 3 -6)
  • V-neck navy school logo jumper (Years 3 – 6)
  • Navy school logo sweatshirt (Nursery to Year 2)
  • Blazer (Year 6 only)
  • Plain black shoes (not trainers)

On PE days, pupils must wear the school PE kit only.

This is especially important for safety.  Having the correct shoes for physical activities, and clothing that is not restrictive, for completing physical activity are essential for helping us to ensure pupils complete all PE lessons safely.

The Autumn/Winter term PE kit for all pupils from Year Reception to Year 6 consists of:

  • A school navy logo t-shirt
  • Navy  leggings, tracksuit bottoms or skort (no logos etc)
  • Plain black trainers
  • A school logo sweatshirt (not the v-neck jerseys for KS2 pupils. Sweatshirts are available from the school office in KS2 sizes).

Please note that pupils who do not have the correct PE kit will not be able to participate in their PE lesson. They will be given alternate work to do, and a note will be sent home highlighting why they were not able to complete their lesson that day.

We thank you in advance in supporting our school’s uniform policies.

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Preschool:

This week, the Preschool have been celebrating the beauty of autumn! They explored the changing season through creative leaf crafts, painting real leaves in bright, vibrant colours and adding a touch of sparkle with glitter. The children loved experimenting with textures and colours while chatting about the falling leaves and crisp autumn air. Their beautiful creations are now displayed around the room, bringing a warm and colourful autumnal glow to our space.

Nursery:

This week in RE, Nursery discussed the special people in our lives, focusing on their families. Sparking lovely group discussions, the children shared who is important to them and why. They also used a range of creative materials to make houses and added their family members inside. It was wonderful to see them proudly talking about their loved ones. This activity helped the children understand the importance of family, love, and belonging.

Reception:

This week, Reception have been enjoying their new story, Tree by Britta Teckentrup. The children loved the colourful illustrations, especially those of the animals living in and around the tree. We have been exploring autumn, winter and spring, noticing and discussing how the world changes and adapt with the seasons – like the clothes we wear and the foods we eat. We also touched on how the changing seasons affect the animals and the tree itself. It has been wonderful to see the children so curious and excited to learn about the world around them!

Year 1:

This week, Year 1 have been artists and exploring the power of lines in Art. Using bold colours, shapes, and patterns, the children experimented with how lines can create movement, texture, and energy in their work. Their creativity shone through as they painted vibrant, expressive pieces full of joy and imagination. We are so proud of their focus, enthusiasm, and growing confidence as young artists — our hallway has never looked brighter!

Year 2:

Year 2 had a very special reading session that brought lots of smiles and excitement. Their library session happened to coincide with the Blessing of the Animals service, so the pupils decided to bring along their favourite stuffed toys to read to. Everyone loved practicing reading aloud to their cuddly companions, and it was a great opportunity to build confidence and expression in a relaxed atmosphere. Many shared their favourite stories with pride, and it was lovely to see how engaged and enthusiastic they were. We then talked about how reading can be enjoyed anywhere and with anyone – even a favourite soft toy.

Year 3:

Year 3 have finished their Robot Adventure writing and the children’s language choices and stamina writing for an extended period of time have been truly impressive. We’ve been learning about similes, adverbs, adjectives, and interesting verbs to make our writing better, which they will share at parent’s evening next week. We are wrapping up all our topics for this half term over the next week, and the projects for History have been fantastic to see. Thank you to all parents & carers for your help with the projects, they look fantastic!

Year 4:

Year 4 have had a very hands-on week, getting stuck into our exploration of the human body by creating our own model of the digestive system using tights for the intestines! We’ve also been getting to grips with addition and subtraction as we round off our focus on number and place value in Maths. Now did you know – there’s a monster living under Burdett Coutts! That’s what we discovered when we heard some strange rumblings and came across a collection of bizarre-looking eggs and black fur in our Reading Corner. We’ve decided to put our best reporter hats on and write a newspaper article revealing exactly what is going on with this monstrous presence to shed some light on the mystery!

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a busy and exciting time this week. In Maths, we started our multiplication and division unit, exploring multiples, factors and problem solving challenges. In Writing, we read a Beowulf short story and wrote our own alternative endings, thinking about who might win in the duel with the She-Hag. In Art, we continued drawing our dream houses and futuristic schools inspired by Zaha Hadid, focusing on details using fine lines. And for Black History Month, we celebrated our class namesake, Mae Jemison. We found it particularly inspiring that she was the first black woman in space and created portraits reflecting on her inspiring life alongside her quotes. In History, we learned more about the Anglo-Saxons, the importance and significance of artefacts found across the UK, and how they’ve shaped history and the present. In PSHE, we continued our unit about responsibilities and have discussed ways in which we can reflect these responsibilities in our school life.

Year 6:

As Historians, Year 6 have been learning about the important role animals played during the First World War. They began by sharing what they already knew and discussing the different sources of information that have helped us understand animals’ involvement. The pupils discovered how horses, pigeons, dogs, elephants, camels and even cats were used for transport, communication and to support morale on the front line. One of the highlights was learning about Sergeant Stubby, a heroic dog who served alongside American soldiers. Stubby was known for warning troops of gas attacks, locating wounded soldiers, and even capturing a German spy in the trenches – earning him the rank of sergeant. His bravery and loyalty made him a symbol of hope and courage for the soldiers he served with. The pupils carried out their own research into the different roles animals played and took part in discussions about the advantages and disadvantages of relying on animals during the war.
