☀️What a SUN-tastic School Community Event🙂

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Sizzling Summer Fair on Saturday 20 June. It was a wonderful afternoon and a real celebration of our school community, helped along by the glorious summer sunshine.
There was so much to enjoy, from the delicious food and BBQ to the games, bouncy castle, nail art, crafts and many other stalls and activities. It was lovely to see so many families, pupils, staff and friends of the school coming together and enjoying the day.
We have received such wonderful feedback, and thanks to your generous support, we are delighted to share that the fair raised an amazing £2095 after costs. This is a fantastic total and will make a real difference to the school.

A very special thank you must go to our PTA parents, staff, and all the parents, carers and family members who helped with the planning, preparation, set-up, running of stalls and packing away at the end of the day. Your time, energy and support are hugely appreciated. You are all superstars, and we simply could not do it without you.
Please look out for the September edition of our newsletter, where we will share FOBC meeting dates and key events planned for the Autumn Term 2026.

Out & About..

Year 6 Mudlarking Trip in Wapping:
On Friday 19 June, Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic day in Wapping as part of our Secrets of the Thames project. Travelling by Uber Boat along the River Thames, they spotted some of London’s famous landmarks before arriving at Wapping Foreshore for a mudlarking session with Thames Explorer Trust.
Working as historians and archaeologists, pupils searched the foreshore for clues about the past and discovered artefacts including pottery fragments, clay pipes and animal bones. They used their historical enquiry skills to consider what the objects were, when they may have been used and how they came to be buried along the riverbank.
In the afternoon, they took part in an animation workshop with Tom Hillenbrand, creating characters inspired by historical photographs for an animation based on Walter Greaves’ rowing journey along the Thames.
A huge thank you to Peter Daniel from Westminster Archives and the team at Thames Explorer Trust for providing such an engaging and memorable experience. The trip brought local history to life and helped pupils deepen their understanding of the River Thames and its importance in shaping London’s past.

Year 5 Trip to the Science Museum
On Tuesday 30 June, Year 5 enjoyed an exciting trip to the Science Museum. This term, they have been learning about space, including the planets and how they orbit the Sun.
During the visit, pupils explored the Space Gallery before heading into the IMAX theatre to watch the 3D film Our Beautiful Planet. Wearing 3D glasses, they were fully immersed in life on the International Space Station, learning how astronauts live, work and observe Earth from space.
The film gave them a powerful view of our planet and helped them think about the impact of climate change and human activity. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would love to watch another IMAX film soon.

St. Stephens Week Concert in St. Stephens Church
On Wednesday 1 July, as part of St Stephen’s Week, the Burdett-Coutts choir and pupils from Years 3 and 4 joined the school choir of Greycoat Hospital for an informal concert.
Our choir, conducted by Miss Gweni Hunting-Morris and accompanied by Mr Carden, performed For the Beauty of the Earth by John Rutter, School Song from Matilda, and Viva la Vida by Coldplay.
Greycoat Hospital, conducted by Ms Katy Ambrose, sang a varied selection of songs, including The Lord is my Shepherd and Love Divine by Howard Goodall. Year 6 also recited their beautiful SATs poem, while the Frozen cast from Years 3 and 4 performed Let it Go and Fixer Upper.
The concert ended with both school choirs joining together to sing John Rutter’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You. Although the adult audience was small, the hall was full of pupils from both schools, making the applause for every performance wonderfully enthusiastic.
Burdett-Coutts choir always enjoys singing with neighbouring schools, and it was a lovely opportunity to come together through music.

Disney: Year 3 & 4 Bring the Magic of Frozen KIDS to the Stage

This week, our Year 3 and 4 pupils delighted audiences with their performances of Disney’s Frozen KIDS as part of the Disney Musicals in Schools programme.
After weeks of rehearsals, pupils took to the stage with confidence, enthusiasm and determination, showcasing their growing performance skills alongside the teamwork, resilience and commitment they developed throughout the project.
From the opening number to the final bows, they captivated audiences with their singing, acting and choreography. Creative staging and projected backdrops helped bring the Kingdom of Arendelle to life, while every pupil played an important part in making the production such a success.
We were delighted to welcome Felicity, our Disney Musicals in Schools Project Coordinator, who praised the pupils’ confident performances and the joy they showed throughout the show. She also recognised the enormous amount of work and dedication from staff behind the scenes.
A huge thank you to all the staff who gave their time, energy and creativity to the project, and to our families for their continued support. Most importantly, congratulations to every one of our Year 3 and 4 pupils. They should all be incredibly proud of what they achieved together.

Sports Day

We are very excited to let parents, carers and pupils know that Sports Day will once again be held at Vincent Square on Thursday 10 July.
Parents and carers are warmly invited to join us from 9:30am to cheer on the pupils and enjoy a picnic lunch together afterwards. As warmer weather is forecast for the day, we have planned a slightly shorter programme of activities to help keep everyone safe and comfortable.
All sporting activities will finish at 11:30am, followed by the sprint finals, parent and teacher races between 11:30am and 12:00pm. Pupils will then have lunch from 12:00pm to 12:30pm.
Please look out for the full letter coming home with your child today, which includes further details about the day and what pupils will need to bring.
School Photos

Class photos for all pupils were taken this week. Your child will bring home their order slip on Friday 3 July.
Please follow the instructions on the slip to view the class photo and place your order online. Orders placed by Friday 10 July will be delivered to school before we break up for the summer holidays.
Any orders placed after Friday 10 July will be posted directly to your home address, free of charge. Please note that all orders must be placed by Sunday 2 August 2026.
If you have any questions about the ordering process, please read the information on the slip and visit the website listed first. If you still need help, please contact the school office.
Swimming Lessons for Year 6

We are delighted to announce that swimming lessons will begin again this term, for pupils in Years 3 to 6. Please see the table below for your child’s swimming weeks.
These lessons are an important (and statutory) part of the national curriculum and provide an opportunity for pupils to develop key skills and knowledge about water safety and learning basic swimming skills and strokes.
Pupils are issued with certificates at the end of each unit of swimming, which acknowledge the skill level that they have met.
All swimming lessons will take part at the Queen Mothers Sports Centre. Classes will complete their lessons in blocks (6 consecutive lessons over two weeks), instead of one lesson per week (over 6 weeks).
This arrangement ensures pupils have the best chance to consolidate and make the most of their lessons, with the opportunity to build on learning over sequential days, as opposed to having a week between each lesson.
On the weeks that your child’s class is swimming, they will need to wear their bathing costume to school with their PE kit over the top. They also need to bring in a bag; a towel, underwear and goggles, plus a cap (if they choose to use one).
Children will change into their PE kit after each lesson and put their towel and bathing suit in their bag to return to school.
If you have any questions or queries about your child’s swimming lesson, please contact the office to arrange a time to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

On Monday 6 July, an email will be sent to all families currently using Breakfast Club, After School Club, or both, asking them to confirm their requirements for September 2026.
Please respond by Friday 10 July so that we can prioritise existing users of our wrap-around care provision.
New applications will be confirmed on Monday 13 July, with any remaining spaces allocated at that point.
Please note that we are unable to increase the number of wrap-around care places available due to strict pupil-to-staff ratios.

School & PE Uniform:

With the warmer weather now settling in, pupils are welcome to switch to their summer school uniform options. Please ensure that all pieces of school uniform are named.
Please ensure that your children are wearing the correct school uniform to school each day. It is important that all pupils are also wearing the correct school shoes – which are black shoes, and not trainers.
The Summer term uniform options for pupils in Nursery to Year 6 are:
Girls:
- Navy blue and white gingham dress
- Dark grey trousers, skirt or skort
- Short-sleeve white shirt (Years 3 – 6)
- White school logo polo shirt (Nursery – Year 2)
- Tie (Years 3 – 6)
- V-neck navy school logo jumper (Years 3 – 6)
- Navy logo school sweatshirt (Nursery to Year 2)
- Navy logo school sweatshirt (for PE lessons: Years 3 -6)
- Blazer (Year 6 only)
- Plain black shoes (not trainers)
Boys:
- Dark grey shorts or trousers

On PE days, pupils must wear the school PE kit only.
This is especially important for safety. Having the correct shoes for physical activities, and clothing that is not restrictive, for completing physical activity are essential for helping us to ensure pupils complete all PE lessons safely.
The Autumn/Winter term PE kit for all pupils from Year Reception to Year 6 consists of:
- A school navy logo t-shirt
- Navy leggings, tracksuit bottoms or skort (no logos etc)
- Plain black trainers
- A school logo sweatshirt (not the v-neck jerseys for KS2 pupils. Sweatshirts are available from the school office in KS2 sizes).
Please note that pupils who do not have the correct PE kit will not be able to participate in their PE lesson. They will be given alternate work to do, and a note will be sent home highlighting why they were not able to complete their lesson that day.
We thank you in advance in supporting our school’s uniform policies.

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.
As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.
For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:
- Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.
Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Preschool:

This week, Preschool enjoyed reading Hooray for Fish. The children created a variety of colourful sea creatures during their art activities before working together to make their own underwater world. They also loved using the fishing game to practise their skills, developing fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, concentration, counting, turn taking and teamwork. Through these activities, the children built their creativity, communication, language and imagination while learning through play.
Nursery:

Nursery have been making the most of the lovely sunshine with lots of exciting outdoor learning. The children enjoyed exploring the water tray, squeezing different citrus fruits while developing their fine motor skills and investigating textures, smells and colours. With the World Cup now underway, they have also been talking about football and learning about some of the countries taking part. Using small-world figures in our football-themed tuff tray, the children created their own matches, encouraging imaginative play, communication, turn taking and working together.
Reception:

Who doesn’t love an ice cream on a sunny day? Inspired by conversations about keeping cool, Reception created their very own ice cream shop. The children designed colourful posters, choosing flavours, toppings, prices and locations for their shops. Each one was unique, from bargain treats to luxury ice cream parlours. The role-play area has been buzzing with excitement as the children take on different roles, develop their communication and maths skills, and bring their creations to life through imaginative play.
Year 1:

In Science this week, Year 1 began learning about amphibians, with a focus on the fascinating life of frogs. The children discussed the features that make an animal an amphibian and compared them with reptiles, before thinking about what frogs need to survive in their natural habitat. They considered food, water, shelter and safety, then used their scientific knowledge to create detailed frog habitats in their sketchbooks. This activity linked science and art beautifully, allowing them to apply their learning creatively while showing a strong understanding of how living things depend on suitable habitats to thrive.
Year 2:

We are incredibly proud of Year 2 for their fantastic class assembly. The children worked hard to learn their lines, practise their songs and build their confidence before performing for their families and the whole school. They shared learning from across the curriculum, including habitats in Science, The Twits in English, the story of Rama and Sita in RE, and the importance of friendship, kindness and belonging in PSHE. They spoke clearly and confidently, showing just how much they have learned this year. The assembly was a lovely celebration of their hard work, growth and achievements throughout Year 2, and showed that they are ready for the exciting opportunities ahead in Year 3. It ended beautifully with the Year 2 prayer and a joyful performance of We’re All In This Together.
Year 3:

It has been a very busy week for Year 3 with all our Disney performances, and we have been so proud of the children. Seeing their hard work, dedication and effort come together on stage has been amazing. What an achievement! Alongside this, they have been working incredibly hard on their writing samples, showcasing the knowledge and skills they have developed this year. It has been wonderful to see them using ambitious vocabulary, speech, adverbs and their own imagination. This week, they worked with partners to listen, give feedback and edit their writing before publishing it.
Year 4:

Year 4 have been working incredibly hard on their Disney performances this week, while still finding time for some exciting curriculum learning alongside all the singing, dancing and Frozen fun! In Writing, pupils have been completing their Secret Sky Garden transformation narratives, using their writer’s voice to include the advanced grammar features they have learned this year. They were very proud to share their first drafts. In RE, they have continued exploring churches and whether Christians need to attend church to show their faith, with this week’s lesson focusing on different views across Christian denominations. Although Disney is now complete, the excitement continues next week with Sports Day. Time to get those throwing arms ready and hamstrings warmed up for a morning of sporting activities!
Year 5:

Year 5 have had a busy and fulfilling two weeks of learning. In English, they completed their dilemma narratives, focusing on a determined character persuading a cautious character to overcome a challenge. They should be very proud of the progress they have made in writing this year. In Maths, pupils completed their decimals unit and can now multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1,000. Everyone is looking forward to their next unit on negative numbers. In Science, the class earned about the motion of the planets and how they orbit the Sun. They also created soft pastel artwork of the planets, using their knowledge of relative size to draw them in proportion. A highlight was a class trip to the Science Museum, where they watched an exciting IMAX film about Earth. In RE, pupils have continued exploring how Christians show commitment to God, while in RSHE they have been learning about how bodies change as they grow.
Year 6:

This week, as scientists, Year 6 have been exploring Evolution and Inheritance. They have learned how living things adapt to their environments over time and how these adaptations can improve their chances of survival. Pupils explored the work of Charles Darwin, including how finches on the Galapagos Islands evolved different beak shapes to suit different food sources. They also investigated the story of the peppered moth, discovering how changes during the Industrial Revolution affected moth survival and led to changes in wing colour over many generations. To consolidate their learning, the class created comics to illustrate the peppered moth’s evolutionary journey, using scientific vocabulary and creativity to explain adaptation, inheritance, variation and mutation.
