Community Corner

Class Assemblies:

We are delighted to welcome parents to school this term for Friday morning class sharing assemblies on the following dates:

  • 18th November: Year 2
  • 25th November: Year 1

When attending your child’s class assembly, please come to the main school office by 8:55am at the latest. You will be shown upstairs to the First Floor Hall and seated by 9am.

DreamArts

Over the years many of our children have attended drama clubs with DreamArts, a performing arts organisation for children and young people based in Westminster. Their Experiment project is for children aged 7-12 and is held on Saturdays 10:00-1:30 at The Abbey Centre, Great Smith Street SW1P 3BU.

Every child who signs up to the Experiment project will be taken to see The Lion King on Thursday 17th November. The cost is £35 per term but there are bursaries available for families who would need help. Please click here for further information >

Collective Worship

The whole school attends acts of Collective Worship every day.

  • Mondays and Tuesdays: key stage singing assemblies led by Mr Carden.
  • Wednesdays: Church service led by Graham or Helena, the clergy at St Stephens with St John on Rochester Row. These services are very child-friendly, and Year 6 take a leading role by processing, singing in the choir and reading the Bible readings and prayers.
  • Thursdays: We focus on celebrating achievements, led by a member of SLT, School Council or a class teacher with their class. When a class teacher leads the assembly, their class also recite a piece of poetry they have been learning. We would be very grateful if parents could support their children in learning these poems when it is their turn.
  • Friday: Opportunities for classes to share what they have been learning with their families and the rest of the school.

Theme of the Week:

What an exciting Wednesday morning we had in school! We were delighted to welcome a professional accordion player, Natalia Cerqueira, to our assembly. Children and staff alike were dancing in their seats to ‘New York, New York‘ and ‘La Bamba‘, and Mr Carden facilitated a fantastic Q&A with Natalia.

We learnt all about how accordions work, where they originate from and the steps you need to take to learn how to play. The whole school sang for Natalia and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when she spoke to the children afterwards. It’s safe to say she enjoyed the children’s singing very much indeed.

Thank you Natalia for such an inspiring and uplifting start to our Wednesday morning! And thank you to Miss Corinne and Mr Carden for organising it.

Friday morning took a more sombre turn as we marked the end of WWII and commemorated all those who have lost their lives to war. The rain stayed away so we could come together in the playground as a whole school. Thank you to Mr Carden, The Revd. Graham and all staff and pupils for making it such a special service, and to the parents who came.

Over the course of the year we will focus on our school’s three Christian Values: Friendship, Compassion and Service.

Throughout the Autumn Term we will be concentrating on Friendship, and this ties in beautifully with the start of a new school year, new class teachers, new friends and making a fresh start.

Community Questions:

As we are thinking about Remembrance Day this week, the church theme is ‘Life after Death‘ and ‘Leaving a Legacy‘. These are big questions to consider, but important things to think about and discuss with loved ones.

  • Do you ever think about dying and what happens after you die
  • What do you believe happens when you die?
  • Do you think we should remember each year, those who have died in wars or conflict? Why/why not? What does it achieve?
  • What would you like to be remembered for?

September 2022: Nursery & Reception places available

If you are looking for a Nursery Place, we have a one full-time space and one part-time afternoon space still available to start immediately or  in January 2023.

We have four places available in our Reception class, with availablity to start immediately or  in January 2023.

We’d be delighted for you to join us for a 30-minute EYFS tour, where you will have the chance explore our Early Years setting, speak to key staff and ask any questions regarding admissions and your child starting with us at Burdett-Coutts.

Please contact us to register for our tours which take place every Thursday morning @ 09:30 – 10:30 during term time.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Nursery:

This week Nursery have made lemonade out of the rainy weather. Or should we say, they have made leaf potions! They rolled up their sleeves and enjoyed all that this autumn weather has been throwing at them. And who doesn’t like a good splashing about in puddles and kicking and rolling about in piles of leaves?!

Reception:

This term in Music we are playing the drums! We have been learning to follow a beat and repeat a tune that Mr Carden plays. We have been practicing playing fast and slow and experimenting with different speeds. We really look forward to and enjoy our weekly music lessons with Mr Carden.

Year 1:

In our Science lesson, Year 1 attempted to make a bridge out of cardboard and lolly sticks and with Lego. We talked about the different properties of these materials and why building a Lego bridge was so much easier. We worked well and have been practicing communicating and working collaboratively as a team.

Year 2:

This week, Year 2 have been learning about Remembrance Day and the history behind this day. We looked at the symbol of the poppy and discussed why people wear them, and what we remember by wearing them. We also explored different acts of achieving and creating peace, sharing our views about values such as fairness, equality, love, caring and sharing.

Year 3:

This term Year 3 have been further developing and building on  previous skills learnt when playing percussion instruments, most especially the drums. They have been listening carefully at different rhythms and then copying and adapting them. They were then set the task to work collaboratively in groups to come up with their own rhythm and tune. This proved to very successful (if a little noisy at times), as they were challenged to include the use of different speeds and pitches to make their overall rhythms more interesting.

Year 4:

This week in our Science lessons, we have begun to investigate states of matter. We understand there are solids, liquids and gases and are beginning to recognise  their properties. We will be experimenting to find out if matter can be changed and if any changes are reversible or not. We will also be exploring the water cycle this term. There are some simple experiments you could do at home, using cress, cotton wool or soil, a plastic cup and cling film; creating a mini water cycle. Maybe give it a try!

Year 5:

To celebrate the end of our Anglo Saxon topic we have made our own helmets and shields! We have found it very interesting learning about how Anglo Saxons defended themselves and why battle was important to them. We used paper mache and balloons for the helmets and studied Anglo Saxon designs to help us.

Year 6:

This week in English, we have been writing narratives from the perspective of Charlie Peaceful, (one of the main characters within our current class text, Private Peaceful). We focused on using topical and colloquial language to help us ‘get into character‘. We also tried to write in the style of the author Michael Morpurgo, using simple sentences for impact. Once we had completed our narratives, we re-visited our top ticks and then completed peer assessments based upon these. This then helped us to edit and improve our writing further.
