Autumn Term Parents’ Evening

Thank you to all parents who attended their child’s parents evening this week. It was a wonderful opportunity to view some of your child’s work that they had chosen to celebrate and share. It was also a productive time to discuss outcomes, achievements and next steps with your child’s class teacher.

Children in Need

We had a wonderful celebration day for Children in Need, which was enjoyed by everyone. We all wore spotty clothes to celebrate and raise money for this excellent charity that helps to look after and protect so many under-privileged and sick children in the UK.

We played several games, including Pin the Nose on Pudsey in class and penalty spot shoot outs at lunchtime. Some of us even completed the Joe Wicks workout in class! We then ate delicious cupcakes and had lots of fun all day! All in all, we raised £220 for this important charity – thank you for all your donations!

Community Corner

Class Assemblies:

We are delighted to welcome parents to school this term for Friday morning class sharing assemblies on the following dates:

  • 25th November: Year 1

When attending your child’s class assembly, please come to the main school office by 8:55am at the latest. You will be shown upstairs to the First Floor Hall and seated by 9am.

Collective Worship

The whole school attends acts of Collective Worship every day.

  • Mondays and Tuesdays: key stage singing assemblies led by Mr Carden.
  • Wednesdays: Church service led by Graham or Helena, the clergy at St Stephens with St John on Rochester Row. These services are very child-friendly, and Year 6 take a leading role by processing, singing in the choir and reading the Bible readings and prayers.
  • Thursdays: We focus on celebrating achievements, led by a member of SLT, School Council or a class teacher with their class. When a class teacher leads the assembly, their class also recite a piece of poetry they have been learning. We would be very grateful if parents could support their children in learning these poems when it is their turn.
  • Friday: Opportunities for classes to share what they have been learning with their families and the rest of the school.

Theme of the Week:

We have had a great week celebrating Anti-Bullying Week, which kicked off with a very colourful Odd Socks Day on Monday! Huge thanks to School Council for leading our Anti-Bullying assembly on Thursday.

And a special mention to Israa and Nuraa, who took it upon themselves to write a poem and prayer for the assembly too.

Over the course of the year we will focus on our school’s three Christian Values: Friendship, Compassion and Service.

Throughout the Autumn Term we will be concentrating on Friendship, and this ties in beautifully with the start of a new school year, new class teachers, new friends and making a fresh start.

Community Questions:

The theme for the week in church was following Jesus even when times are tough.

  • Who encourages you to do good, to be the best version of you
  • What do they do or say?

Challenge: Encourage someone this week to do something good.

September 2023: Nursery & Reception places available

If you are looking for a Nursery  or Reception Place, for your child from September 2023, please contact the school and make an appointment to join a school tour.

We’d be delighted for you to join us for a 30-minute bespoke EYFS tour, where you will have the chance explore our Early Years setting, speak to key staff and ask any questions regarding admissions and your child starting with us at Burdett-Coutts.

Please contact us to register for our tours which take place every Thursday, with times available from 09:30 – 14:30 during term time.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Nursery:

The Nursery class are now proud pet parents to five fancy goldfish! They have really enjoyed teaching the fish phonics, how to behave well in school and how to be kind to their friends. A huge welcome to Burdett-Coutts for Gucci, Chanel, Cartier, Loui and Jimmy Choo 🙂

Reception:

In Reception we are learning all about birthday celebrations. We have been talking about why people celebrate birthdays and why they are so special. We have read some fiction and non-fiction books to learn more about how people celebrate birthdays around the world and discussed the different ways we celebrate with our own families and at home. Our favourite part of the week has been our Birthday Role Play! We have been playing at having birthday parties, dressing up in party clothes and enjoying some party games.

Year 1:

In PSHE we have been talking about our differences and similarities in the class and how we can accept others for who they are. Year 1 is really focussing on the importance of making good choices and being kind to friends and responding positively to a situation rather than simply reacting. Each week we added a different body part to our person to remind us to always accept each other’s differences.

Year 2:

This Anti-Bullying Week, our school participated in ‘Odd Socks Day’, a opportunity to express ourselves and celebrate our individuality and what makes us all unique. Year 2 have been learning about the definition of bullying as well as exploring what to do if they should see someone being bullied or experience it themselves. One of the activities we completed to illustrate the impact of being unkind to people was saying mean things to a clean smooth paper the teacher was holding. As each child made a hurtful comment, corner of the paper was crumpled until the paper was finally crumpled into a ball. The children then apologised to the paper, and it was slowly unravelled. However, the wrinkles could still be seen on the originally smooth paper. We realised that the paper was never going to go back to the way it was at the beginning. This demonstrated that apologising for one’s behaviour does not always undo the damage that unkind behaviour inflicts on people, and that our words and actions affect people so much, even after we say sorry. We talked about the importance of thinking carefully about the words and actions we choose to use, and that kind words and thoughtful actions are much better things to leave people with.

Year 3:

This week we have been learning all about the bones and muscles in our body and how they work together to create movement. Yesterday, we quizzed ourselves on naming the bones in our body and we are now focusing our learning on the key muscles in our body and the important roles they play. We have also made our own arm! It works in a similar way to a real arm. Quiz your children about the mechanics of opening and closing your arm!

Year 4:

We are having an interesting time in our RE lessons looking at symbolism. Firstly, we looked at the meaning behind many well-known images and universal symbols; including commercial icons such as Nike and McDonalds. We then discussed representations in the major world faiths. Our theme this term is Christianity and The Nativity, so we have been studying what the symbols represent. Ask your child if they can explain the meanings behind the Nativity scene pictured. To help us further with this theme, we are visiting Westminster Abbey later this month, which we are very much looking forward to.

Year 5:

In Art, we are learning all about Architecture. We have been looking at the process of design and how to accurately draw using a ruler. We went to our school’s roof playground to draw pictures of the different buildings we could see. Some of us chose modern buildings and some of us chose older buildings but the techniques for drawing were all the same.

Year 6:

This week in History we have been writing letters from the perspective of WW1 soldiers. The aim of this was to inform our families back home in ‘Blighty‘ (England), what life was like on the Western Front. This involved describing the trenches, food, medical conditions and loss of fellow comrades. To help write an engaging piece, we used information from videos, which described first-hand what the soldiers experienced, and information we gathered during our visit to the Imperial War Museum last year and pictures from the battlefield.
