Community Corner

Collective Worship

The whole school attends acts of Collective Worship every day.

  • Mondays and Tuesdays: key stage singing assemblies led by Mr Carden.
  • Wednesdays: Church service led by Graham or Helena, the clergy at St Stephens with St John on Rochester Row. These services are very child-friendly, and Year 6 take a leading role by processing, singing in the choir and reading the Bible readings and prayers.
  • Thursdays: We focus on celebrating achievements, led by a member of SLT, School Council or a class teacher with their class. When a class teacher leads the assembly, their class also recite a piece of poetry they have been learning. We would be very grateful if parents could support their children in learning these poems when it is their turn.
  • Friday: Opportunities for classes to share what they have been learning with their families and the rest of the school.

Theme of the Week:

This week in church we celebrated the start of Advent and Graham lit the first of the Advent Wreath candles. Well done Mickyas for correctly answering Mrs Camplin’s challenge question: the first candle represents God’s Promise. Who will be able to find out what the second candle represents for next Wednesday?

In church we listened to the reading from Matthew 24:36-44, which is all about being ready for Jesus’ return. Graham talked about using the time of advent to stay awake and alert – not hitting the snooze button!

Over the course of the year we will focus on our school’s three Christian Values: Friendship, Compassion and Service.

Throughout the Autumn Term we will be concentrating on Friendship, and this ties in beautifully with the start of a new school year, new class teachers, new friends and making a fresh start.

Community Questions:

  • Can you think of a time when you weren’t ready in time for something? How did it make you feel?
  • How are you preparing for Christmas? What do you need to do?
  • How do you think Christians ‘get ready’ for Jesus’ return?

Please contact us to register for our tours which take place every Thursday, with times available from 09:30 – 14:30 during term time.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Nursery:

The children are developing into lifelong learners who have a passion to teach and discover all that the world has to offer. Throughout the week they have been engaging in a range of child-led activities, including reviewing our number knowledge to 10.

Reception:

This week we have begun preparing for Christmas. We have been learning how Christians get ready for Christmas and the different traditions celebrated over the Christmas season. We worked together to decorate the Christmas tree and then had lots of fun decorating ourselves. We have an advent calendar and have begun counting down the days till Christmas.

Year 1:

Our current topic in maths is Geometry, where we have been exploring and learning all about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We made some 3D shape models which required lots of persistence!

Year 2:

In Music this term Year 2 have been learning to play the drums. This has included learning to play rhythms together, and composing short pieces with different tempos, and dynamics. We have also been preparing our Christmas songs!

Year 3:

Over the past few weeks, we have been focusing on our times-tables. Everyone has shown great success at understanding the connection between multiplication and division. They have mastered strategies to solve their 3 times-tables and now we are working on our 4 times-tables. Keep practicing these at home!

Year 4:

This week in Science, we have been looking at the water cycle and the processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. We have been thinking about how liquids turn into gas and then back into liquids. We have thought like scientists and realised that molecules behave differently in solids, liquids and gases and that this defines states of matter. We will be carrying out experiments to see how certain conditions affect these processes and whether states of matter can be reversed.

Year 5:

In Jemison Class this week we have been investigating gravity and air resistance. We made our own parachutes and each group changed one aspect – this is called a variable. Everything else must be kept the same to ensure that it is a fair test. One group changed the size of the parachutes, one changed the length of the string, one changed the material of the parachutes, and the final group changed the shape of the parachutes. Then to test which one fell slowest and was therefore safest, we dropped them out the window and timed the fall. It was really fun!

Year 6:

This week in Science we have been learning about microorganisms and we were shocked to discover that 500 million bacteria can fit into the point of a pin. We then explored the different types of organisms: fungus, bacteria, virus and protozoa and explored examples within each group, and sorted them into harmful and non-harmful micro-organisms. This then lead us on to discuss the conditions in which mould thrives and how we can prevent it from spreading within the home.
