Celebrating NSPCC Number Day

On Friday, we celebrated NSPCC Number Day with a fantastic mix of maths, creativity and fun! Children arrived dressed as digits, showcasing their enthusiasm for numbers in all sorts of creative ways.

Throughout the day, every class – from Preschool to Year 6 – took part in exciting maths activities. The younger children explored counting and sorting, while others tackled doubling and symmetry with butterfly wings. Some classes solved a Harry Potter number mystery, while others played interactive games like guess the number by asking mathematical questions.

We also had fun with times tables songs, counting in different languages, and creative maths crafts – including colourful seahorses made from the number 3! A highlight of the day was Biscuit’s Maths Challenge. Every class estimated how many paws and bones were on her bandana, with the closest guesses winning prizes.

Thank you to everyone for making Number Day such an engaging and memorable event, all while supporting a great cause!

Safer Internet Day 2025

Tuesday 11th February was Safer Internet Day. As well as being an integral part of our regular class IT lessons, we further focussed on the importance of safety when using the internet.

Year 6 have been writing and filming, using iPads and editing with iMovie, short films emphasising the need to be careful with our personal information, and remembering how to be safe online. Using Google Docs, Year 4 have been making presentations highlighting the need to be wary of scams online, using the phrase “it looks too good to be true”.

During this week’s whole school assembly around Safer Internet Day, pupils spent time with Mr Carden considering different scenarios online. They discussed and considered with partners to decide whether it was likely that the ‘offer onscreen’ was a scam or not.

These discussions would continue in their classrooms.

Kindness Week: Spreading Joy & Appreciation

Following the reflections of Children’s Mental Health Week, we dedicated this week to something just as important: Kindness Week! Instead of focusing solely on Valentine’s Day, we embraced the idea that kindness, appreciation, and thoughtful actions make our school community stronger every single day.

Across the school, from our youngest learners to our Year 6 leaders, the children engaged in meaningful discussions and activities designed to celebrate and encourage kindness in all its forms.

In Reception, our children had deep and thoughtful conversations about what kindness truly means. Is it simply playing with a friend, or does it go beyond that? They debated the difference between being friendly and making a conscious effort to include someone new, big ideas for such little learners, and a wonderful reflection of their growing empathy and understanding.

Meanwhile, in Year 1, children took their kindness one step further by writing heartfelt letters and cards to their classmates and even to teachers, sharing their appreciation and spreading a little extra joy. In other classes, kindness trees bloomed with notes of recognition, filled with wonderful things that children had noticed about each other throughout the week.

It has been a truly special time to pause and recognise the power of small acts and words of encouragement, gestures of inclusion, and moments of thoughtfulness that create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone. Kindness is not just something we talk about at Burdett-Coutts; it’s something we live and breathe every day, and this week has been a shining example of that.

We are so proud of our pupils for making such a meaningful commitment to kindness, proving that even the smallest actions can have the biggest impact.

Internet Safety & Prevent Parent/Carer Coffee Morning

In today’s digital and social world, our children are more connected than ever. However, with greater access comes greater responsibility.

To help learn how to support your children online, all parents & carers are warmly invited to please join us for two engaging parent workshops where we will explore Online Safety and the Prevent Strategy.

We will share essential tips on protecting your child from online risks, managing screen time, fostering healthy digital habits and building resilience against online threats and radicalisation.

Both sessions are designed for parents and carers of all year levels, with expert advice from Julie, the Prevent Education Officer from Westminster City Council, sharing most-recent data, real-world strategies, and a chance to ask questions.

Don’t miss this opportunity to stay informed and empowered! Let’s work together to create a safer online world and support our children in making informed resilient choices. We look forward to seeing you there.

Book Fair Reading Competition

Get Snapped Reading & WIN a £5 Book Fair voucher!

Our annual book fair will take place from Friday 28th March to Friday 4th April. To create a buzz around it there will be a competition from Nursery to Year 6 to promote our children’s love of reading and the vast number of reading opportunities that we all have in our daily lives.

To enter the competition, all pupils need to do is to send in a photograph of themselves reading anything – a favourite book, comic, recipe, menu, instructions, signs etc – and anywhere, at home, at play, or even out and about.

All photographs will be displayed in classrooms and reading areas around school and all submissions will be put into a draw to win a £5 Book Fair voucher! There are 5 vouchers to be won, and the lucky winners will be announced in assembly on Monday 24th March.

Due to the large numbers of photos we hope to receive, we would really appreciate it if photographs could be printed off and brought into class. If this is not possible, photos can be emailed to office@burdettcoutts.co.uk

We look forward to seeing all your lovely photos, and thank you for your support.

Biscuits Bytes

Woof woof everyone!

This week, I’ve been a paws-itive Kindness Helper, making sure everyone at school felt extra special. I spent my time patrolling the playground, playing with my favourite tiny hoomans, and wagging my tail in approval of all the wonderful acts of kindness I saw.

I also helped out the staff (as usual) by politely requesting meals with a well-placed paw tap and my best puppy-dog eyes. To spread even more joy, I left special handwritten kindness cards around the school. Some of them say things like “You’re pawsome!” and “Keep being kind – Biscuit believes in you!” I hope they bring a little smile to everyone who finds them.

And of course, I loved storytime snuggles. I curled up and listened to all the wonderful books about kindness. I think our children are fantastic readers – but even better at being kind. A big paws-up to everyone for making this week extra special!

Have a fantastic half term and see you back in school on Monday 24th February 🐶

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Preschool:

This week, Preschool have been having a blast learning number recognition by tracing numbers with toy cars! As they zoomed along the curves and lines of each number, they not only practiced identifying them, but also strengthened their fine motor skills.

Nursery:

This week at school, we have been celebrating Kindness Week. In Nursery, we have been encouraging all the children to practice kindness in their daily interactions. Together, we have been creating a long kindness chain to count how many kind deeds we have completed by the end of the week. It has been wonderful to see all the children making an effort to be a little kinder to one another.

Reception:

Our journey with The Gruffalo continued this week as we reached the heart of the story, and finally meeting the Gruffalo himself! Building on last week’s work, the children used their sequencing skills to retell the story right up to this exciting moment, reinforcing their understanding of the characters, the rich vocabulary, and the rhythm of the text.

Through small world play, the children explored the story in new and imaginative ways, bringing the characters to life and deepening their comprehension. They also created their own Gruffalo pictures, using their artistic skills to represent the fearsome creature in all his terrible-tusked glory!

Most excitingly, many children began writing key words and phrases from the book independently, drawing from our keyword library and their growing phonics knowledge. This natural enthusiasm for writing is a huge step in their literacy journey, as they gain confidence in using language creatively and purposefully.

By engaging with The Gruffalo across play, art, reading, and writing, the children are strengthening essential early literacy skills; sequencing, storytelling, vocabulary, and independent mark-making, all while developing a deep love of books. It has been wonderful to see their excitement and confidence grow, proving that stories truly are at the heart of early learning!

This week in Reception, kindness has been at the heart of everything we do. Our children have been deeply engaged in conversations about what it truly means to be kind, beyond simply playing with friends or being polite. Together, we explored the idea that kindness is about making a thoughtful choice to help, include, or uplift someone else, and that real kindness often goes beyond just everyday friendships.

To celebrate and track these acts of kindness, we introduced our Kindness Tree. Every time a child noticed or experienced an act of kindness, they added a bead to its branches. At the time of writing, our tree has over 70 beads, meaning that every child in our class has been actively kind at least once every day, an incredible testament to their growing empathy and awareness of others.

This simple but powerful activity has helped develop key personal and social skills. The children have become more observant of the positive actions around them, learning to recognize and appreciate the impact of kindness in their community. They have also built confidence in expressing gratitude and acknowledging each other’s good deeds, reinforcing the idea that kindness is contagious.

By making kindness a visible and celebrated part of our classroom, the children have not only strengthened their friendships but also gained a deeper understanding of the values that will stay with them far beyond this week. Seeing our Kindness Tree flourish has been a joyful reminder that even the smallest actions can make a big difference!

Year 1:

Year 1 had a fantastic time in Science Club, where they explored the fascinating world of germs through fun experiments. The children loved learning how to stay healthy and keep germs away with hands-on activities! They also enjoyed discovering the importance of kindness, practicing how small acts can make a big difference in making everyone feel happy and included.

Year 2:

This week, Year 2 children have been celebrating Random Acts of Kindness in many thoughtful and creative ways! They began by reading Kindness Grows by Britta Teckentrup, a beautifully illustrated story that shows how kindness brings people together while unkindness creates division, and Gigantic by Rob Biddulph, a heartwarming tale about a little whale who learns that true strength comes from bravery, kindness and being true to oneself. Inspired by these stories, the children became kindness detectives, observing and celebrating acts of kindness by colouring hearts on our 100 Acts of Kindness poster. They also painted kindness rocks with uplifting messages to brighten someone’s day and bring a smile to their faces. To spread even more joy, they crafted colourful clay kindness flowers with the message “If friends were flowers, I’d pick you.” Every child made a flower for a friend, ensuring that kindness blossomed in our classroom. It has been a heartwarming week, and we are so proud of our Year 2 children for showing that kindness truly does grow!

Year 3:

In Writing this week, Year 3 have been learning all about poetry. We are looking at Michael Rosen’s poem, Welly Boots, and have investigated the cultural significance of wellington boots/gumboots around the world. We learnt the poem and explored the structure – lines one, two and four rhyme, but line three doesn’t! We also brainstormed words that rhyme with welly, gum and boots, drawing up a three-column table in our books. We have used these words to write our own poems. It has been so fun working hard to write our fun poems!

Year 4:

This week, Year 4 has been celebrating Random Acts of Kindness! To keep the kindness going both at school and at home, we’ve created a Kindness Bingo card, which each student will take home to fill out daily. In class, whenever we spot acts of kindness, we add a kindness gem to our jar. We’re excited to see how full it gets by the end of the week! It’s been a heartwarming experience, and we’re looking forward to spreading even more kindness every day. This week is important to us as it helps foster a sense of community and empathy in our classroom. It reminds us that small, everyday acts of kindness can have a big impact on others’ well-being and by focusing on kindness, we can promote inclusivity, respect, and understanding in school and in the wider community.

Year 5:

We’ve made it to the final week of Spring 1, and it’s been such a joy to see Year 5’s talents shine! We’re especially proud of their confidence to share their art, and writing, in assembly last week. This week we have loved learning to be a conductor in Music, and how to communicate and work as a team effectively. They have created some great pieces of music and are learning the ways of keeping an orchestra together. Have a happy half term!

Year 6:

In PSHE, Year 6 have been focusing on what it means to be kind and how small acts of kindness can have a big impact on someone’s day. We discussed helping our elderly neighbours, offering to buy food for the homeless, helping our friends in class and being willing to listen if they don’t seem to be ok. We have created a tree of kindness and each time that we carry out an act of kindness, we have added it to our tree. Let’s see how many acts of kindness that we have carried out over the course of the week!
