Out & About…
Tuesday 15th October: Year 4 Trip to the Science Museum
On their trip to the Science Museum, Year 4 had the chance to consolidate class-based learning. The children had fun taking part in a Wonderlab seminar about the digestive system, and further explored their understanding via a range of activities and displays. The highlights from the day were the friction slide, pulley swing and watching what happens to food in each step of the digestive system.

Woof….
🐶 Happy Friday everyone.
Phew – what a busy week it has been. I have been out and about visiting classes to have a first paw view of some of the amazing learning that is taking place across our school.
I visited a Year 2 writing lesson, where they were retelling the story of the Lonely Beast. The lesson began with some of the children reading the story to the rest of the class. Wow, they’re such confident readers!
Next they discussed the main events in the story and what they needed to include in their writing. Apparently the ‘top ticks’ included expanded noun phrases, time connectives, conjunctions, past tense and organising the events in order. The children were so good at remembering that.
I thought it was a pawfect lesson! 🐶
The children were engaged and focused, asking and responding to questions with confidence 🙂 Well done Year 2 and THANK YOU for sharing your learning with me. I look forward to sharing the learning from another class very soon.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend, and see you all next week.
Love Biscuit x

Accelerated Reader Program
We are very excited to announce that we are now part of the Accelerated Reader program, for children in Years 1 to 6.
Accelerated Reader encourages children to read regularly, while ensuring that they bring home a book appropriate to their reading level. There are three steps to the program:
1. Pupils complete a star assessment which informs us of their reading level
2. They choose a reading book from the library, appropriate to their reading level
3. After they’ve read the book, they complete an online quiz about the it. The children earn points for the quizzes that they complete.
Pupils can log into the Accelerated Reader portal @ https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/2243804
They can also log in by clicking on the Accelerated Reader link found at the top right hand corner of our website (in between Staff Login and Sooper Books).

Online Safety
Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.
As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.
For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:
- Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.
Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals
Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.
We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.
This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.
- If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.
Preschool:
After reading our core text Handa’s Surprise, Preschool have had the opportunity to engage in creative activities by making animals from the story. This hands-on experience not only makes the learning fun but also deepens their understanding of the world around them. After reading the story together, the children were able to label the animals, demonstrating their growing communication and literacy skills. The art activities provided a valuable opportunity for them to express their creativity while also developing their fine motor skills and helping them to make sense of the story and build connections important for their literacy skills. Through the story, the children were introduced to different cultures, fostering an appreciation for diversity and the world beyond their own.
Nursery:
Nursery have been focusing on their fine motor development, more specifically through an activity using scissors. The children practiced cutting along lines in various styles and patterns, which helped strengthen their hand muscles and improve their coordination. This activity also supports early writing skills by encouraging precision and control. We also discussed how to safely use and handle scissors, including how to pass them to one another. It was a productive and enjoyable way for the children to enhance their motor skills while exploring different cutting techniques.
Reception:
After our Harvest celebrations in school and church last week, Reception read The Scarecrow’s Wedding by Julia Donaldson. This inspired the children to create their own scarecrow portraits out of hessian, straw and craft supplies. They are enchantingly sweet and full of character – just like our pupils!
Year 1:
This week in Maths, Year 1 have been creating and solving many different addition problems, solving these by using a tens frame and the part whole model.
Year 2:
This term, Year 2 explored the themes of uniqueness and self-expression through two illustrated books, There’s Only One You by Kathryn Heling and All the Ways to be Smart by Davina Bell. In There’s Only One You, children learnt that everyone is unique in their own way; whether in appearance, personality or abilities, and that these differences are what make us all special. The book encourages the appreciation of diversity, while helping children to recognise the value of their own individuality. In All the Ways to be Smart, children were reminded that intelligence comes in many forms – not just through traditional subjects like Science or Maths, but also in creativity, kindness, storytelling and imagination. The book empowers children to celebrate their own talents, whether it’s through painting pictures, making friends or simply being thoughtful and curious. Inspired by these themes, Year 2 delved into abstract art and colour theory, learning how lines, shapes and colours can be used to express feelings and ideas. They created their own abstract self-portraits using watercolours and photos printed as high-contrast black and white images, alongside sentences about themselves, which they proudly shared with the rest of the class.
Year 3:
Year 3 have wrapped up their unit on Prehistoric Painting, and they’re going out with a bang! Pupils have studied the Chauvet Cave, located in southern France, famous for the wide range of Stone Age art on its walls. They took a good look at the bare hand stamping and the blown pigment techniques used, learning about positive and negative handprints. They learnt that these handprints were most likely used as part of a ritual. They then created their own prehistoric handprint art, but with a modern twist, using different colours. In Writing, the children have done something a little bit different. For their assessment piece they are showing all the techniques learnt (using paragraphs, time connectives, rich adjectives) in a story based on a picture. They created a class plan and then made their own, and will use these planning sheets to write their own stories. It is so fun to see how creative everyone is, and how everyone used this picture for inspiration in a different way!
Year 4:
In RE this term, Year 4 are learning about and developing their understanding of the Islamic religion. As part of their learning, they have explored the importance of prayer for Muslims, and how they are led and undertaken at regular intervals every day. During discussions, pupils have been passionately sharing aspects of their religion with the class and sharing artefacts that they have brought along to stimulate their discussions.
Year 5:
In PSHE, we have as a class drawn up our Year 5 class charter. We came up with our own set of class rules after considering our rights and responsibilities. We created a lovely poster so we can refer to our class rules regularly. We considered whether some rules or responsibilities are more important than others and prioritised them. It was agreed that the number one priority was to respect the rights of our classmates to an uninterrupted education, which can be achieved by everyone following the class charter.
Year 6:
This week in English, we have been learning how to write a ‘flashback‘ through an animation called ‘The Piano‘. We explored the mood of the short film, the emotions of the characters, and how the tenses changed throughout the different scenes. We then used this as a basis to write the words to this animation. We have tried hard to put ourselves in the mind of the main character and use emotive language, a variety of adverbials, noun phrases and integrated speech to really tell the main characters’ story.
