Out & About…

Monday 23rd June | The Garden Museum:
Year 2 visited the Garden Museum for a jam-packed day of scientific discovery! Our young Scientists took part in a workshop all about seeds – what they are, how they grow and how they travel. We examined a wide variety of seeds, comparing their shapes and sizes and even played a matching game where we had to describe seeds using photographs and find their names in Latin!

Pupils had the opportunity to use real microscopes to closely observe different types of seeds and discuss which plants or dishes they’re used in. They then dissected a butter bean to identify the seed coat, food store and baby plant (embryo), proudly sharing our knowledge with our plant expert for the day, Samia.

They also explored the Healing Garden, where they identified plants and their fruits, and learnt more about the history of the museum – including how it used to be a church! Samia was very impressed with the children’s enthusiasm, scientific vocabulary and even their knowledge of the Great Fire of London and the extinction of the dodo!

After planting our own seeds to take home, we had lunch in the garden and returned to school with our brains full and our hands a little muddy – the perfect day for a Year 2 Scientist!

Drop Off & Collection: An important message for drivers

If your child/ren are dropped off and collected from school by car, please ensure that you find a legal parking place to park in to facilitate this.

Please do not park/stop or idle on the zig-zag lines outside the school gates, or double park on the road curb opposite (also a school entrance).  This dangerous and illegal.

This is especially important at the moment, as there are three sets of separate street, water or phone line works also taking place along the street. These works already pose an additional hazard to pedestrians who are crossing the roads, and have had an impact on the amount of close parking to school entrance.

Therefore, please ensure that you leave enough time to find a park at the start and end of the school day. This will enable you to drop off & collect your child/ren safely and ensure the safety of all other pedestrians at these busy times.

Many thanks for your co-operation in keeping our school and wider community members safe 🙂

Swimming Lessons: Years 3 – 6

We are delighted to announce that swimming lessons will begin again this term, for pupils in Years 3 to 6. They will take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week.

  • Year 5: Weeks beginning 23rd and 30th June (no swimming on Friday 27th June as it is an INSET day)
  • Year 6: Weeks beginning 7th and 14th July

These lessons are an important (and statutory) part of the national curriculum and provide an opportunity for pupils to develop key skills and knowledge about water safety and learning basic swimming skills and strokes.

All swimming lessons will take part at the Queen Mother’s Sports Centre. Classes will complete their lessons in blocks (6 consecutive lessons over two weeks), instead of one lesson per week (over 6 weeks).

This arrangement ensures pupils have the best chance to consolidate and make the most of their lessons, with the opportunity to build on learning over sequential days, as opposed to having a week between each lesson.

On the weeks that your child’s class is swimming, they will need to wear their bathing costume to school with their PE kit over the top. They also need to bring in a bag; a towel, underwear and goggles, plus a cap (if they choose to use one).

Children will change into their PE kit after each lesson and put their towel and bathing suit in their bag to return to school.

Pupils will swim on Monday, Wednesday & Fridays of each week. They will walk to and from the pools with their class teacher and Mr Raheem.

If you have any questions or queries about your child’s swimming lesson, please contact the office to arrange a time to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Burdett-Coutts Summer Fair

Our next school fundraising event will be the Summer Fair, which will take place on Saturday 12th July from 12:00 until 4:00 pm.

There’ll be an exciting range of stalls including games, bouncy castle plus food and refreshments available to purchase on the day, and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming everyone!

If you would like to provide a food plate (similar to what we did at our recent International Evening), please inform the office via email or please come in person to speak to Ms Ilhan.

All donations and provision of food items will be passed onto our school’s PTA The Friends of Burdett-Coutts.

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Preschool:

This week Preschool have continued exploring the book ‘Hooray for Fish‘. One game they have been enjoying is a matching game with the fish characters from the story. This matching game is fantastic for their cognitive skills, as they must apply their memory and concentration skills. It also extends the children’s language and communication skills as they discuss the fish names and use their visual memory to match the fish.

Nursery:

In Nursery, we explored a variety of musical instruments with a special focus on music from Africa. The children really enjoyed discovering and playing these instruments during our music sessions, where they also got to sing songs whilst using the instruments. Their enthusiasm and creativity truly brought the sounds and stories of African music to life in our classroom.

Reception:

In Reception, our young writers have been working so hard as we continue our focus on Anna Hibiscus. Through the story, the children have journeyed to African beaches, explored the sights, sounds, and sunshine of Anna’s world, and reflected on how different it is from life here in England. This comparison has sparked rich conversations and inspired some truly thoughtful writing. It’s been incredible to see how far the children have come on their own writing journeys this year – from mark-making to full sentences filled with imagination and meaning. Just like Anna’s travels, their progress is a real adventure worth celebrating. We couldn’t be prouder of their growing confidence and creativity!

Year 1:

Year 1 have been busy little scientists. We have been learning about the different types of diets animals have. We explored, sorted and grouped animals into 3 different categories: herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We enjoyed sorting animals based their different diets and even explored what type of diet we have!

Year 2:

This week, as Scientists, Year 2 have been exploring the fascinating world of seeds. We learnt new scientific vocabulary such as germinate, seed coat, embryo and cotyledon – the special food store inside a seed! To deepen our understanding, we dissected soaked broad beans and carefully examined what was inside. Using our scientific observation skills, we peeled off the seed coat and identified the root, shoot and the food store that helps the seed grow. We discovered that seeds are incredibly clever – even when they don’t have light, water or soil, they can still begin to germinate thanks to the food stored inside them. Pupils were amazed to learn that this early growth, before any leaves appear, is powered entirely by the energy packed into the seed itself. What a brilliant discovery!

Year 3:

In PSHE and Science this week, we have been learning about the changes that our bodies go through as we get older and have been asking some very thoughtful questions about these changes. In Maths, we have now finished our learning around shape and have started learning about statistics, looking at pictograms and bar graphs and how these are used to show data. In Writing, we have been using art skills to publish our descriptive writing based on Leon and the Place Between.

Year 4:

Year 4 has had an excellent week enjoying the sunshine! We took the opportunity to go outside and draw 3D vases in the style of sculpture artist Magdalene Odundo. We used different coloured chalk and shading to emphasise light and shadow to make the artwork come to life! In Writing, we’ve started to explore stories, using speech punctuation to write dialogues between a mother lioness and her cub. Maths is taking us to shape and geometry, and we’re learning the differences between acute and obtuse angles, and different polygons. Make sure to ask us this week about isosceles, equilateral and scalene triangles!

Year 5:

It’s been another fun and busy week in Year 5, including the start of our sequence of swimming lessons. It’s been great to see the class showing and growing their skills! We will swim for 2 weeks. We have wrapped up our decimal learning in Maths and had some great results on the end of unit assessment. The children have worked really hard on a difficult concept. We now begin our new unit about negative numbers. We are continuing with our Science space learning and have delved into the sun’s position, earth’s rotation and orbiting and shadows. This week we made sundials to test our knowledge. Next week we have a trip to the Natural History Museum to further explore this.

Year 6:

This week we learnt how to stencil using craft knives to make a template to enable us to spray paint onto our ‘stippled walls’. Our work was inspired by the infamous Banksy who is a mysterious street artist from the UK. The children were intrigued as no one knows exactly who he is, but his artwork appears suddenly on buildings, streets, and walls—often with powerful messages about politics, society, and the world around us. His style is bold and often uses stencils, which lets him work quickly and in secret. Some of his most famous works show children, rats, police, and symbols of peace—all used to make people think. Banksy’s art has appeared all over the world, and although he doesn’t sell his pieces himself, some of them have sold for millions of pounds!
