School Class Photographs: Tuesday 27 June

All children will have their class photograph taken this Tuesday 27 June. Please ensure that your child comes to school in their full school uniform and is wearing their black school shoes, not trainers.

  • EYFS and KS1 pupils need to wear their school sweatshirt. They will only have to wear this for their photo and not for the whole day in the warm weather.
  • KS2 pupils need to wear their ties and jumpers for photographs, and Year 6 will need to have their blazer also. They will only need to wear these for the photograph and will then be able to remove these, due to the warm weather.
  • Year 4 need to wear their full school uniform and their school shoes to school and bring their PE kit and trainers to school. They will change for their PE lesson in the afternoon.
  • Year 5 need to wear their bathing suits and PE kit for swimming as normal (lesson is first thing in the morning) and bring their full school uniform including their school shoes, to school to change into, after swimming (their photo slot is after lunch).

2-year old Pre-school Provision

We are excited to be able to confirm that from September 2023, we will be offering a 2-year old pre-school provision.

If you would like to reserve a space for September 2023, please collect an application pack from the school office as soon as possible and return this, along with your deposit, to secure your place.

Please note that places are limited and we’ve already had a strong response from in-school families. School families have a week to sign up before the offer for places is advertised more widely across the borough.

If you know of friends or family currently on a waiting list for a 2-year old place but who are not attending our school, please ask them to get in touch with us.

School Meals

If you would like your child to move from bringing a packed lunch to having a school meal, you must inform the office at least a week in advance of this change being made. Kindly note pupils are not allowed to alternate between having packed lunches and/or school meals on a daily or weekly basis. If you have any questions, please contact Ms Baker in the school office.

You can find the current school lunch menu here >

If you require a printed copy, please ask at the school office. Should you have any questions about the menu, kindly make an appointment to speak with Miss Barnett.

Are you getting to school on time?

A huge thank you to all of our families who are in school everyday and arrive on time! It is important that your child attends school every day and on time. Arriving late to school is unsettling for children and disrupts the start to their day.

Our school day starts at 09:00, and all pupils need to be in school by 08:55, to ensure that they are ready for learning at 09:00. Teachers are waiting in classes with learning ready to start at this time.

The main pupil entrance (gates) will open at 08:45 and will close at 08:55. After this time parents will need to bring their child/ren via school office. Please ensure your child is in school before 08:55.

From the February Half Term you will need to sign your children in if entering through the office. The time of entry and reason for lateness will be noted.

We are carefully monitoring attendance and punctuality as we have noticed an increasing trend of both becoming a pattern for some families.

Routines are the easiest way to ensure your child attends school on time every day, so try to create good routines for the start of your day, particularly if mornings are hectic in your household.

Try and prepare as much as possible the night before, and ensure that older children are taking much more responsibility for their readiness for school.

Did you know?!

  • 10 minutes late every day = 33 hours lost learning each year!
  • Lateness and absence has a significant impact not only on your child’s learning, but also others, as teachers may have to re-teach late arrivals to ensure they can participate in the lesson.

Swimming Lessons for Years 3 – 6

We are delighted to announce that swimming lessons will begin again for pupils in Years 3 – 6 this term. These lessons are an important (and statutory) part of the national curriculum and provide an opportunity for pupils to develop key skills and knowledge about water safety and learning basic swimming skills and strokes. Pupils are issued with certificates at the end of each unit of swimming, which acknowledge the skill level that they have met.

All swimming lessons will take part at the Queen Mothers Sports Centre. Classes will complete their lessons in blocks (8 consecutive lessons over two weeks), instead of one lesson per week (over 8 weeks).

This arrangement ensures pupils have the best chance to consolidate and make the most of their lessons, having the opportunity to build on learning over sequential days, as opposed to having large gaps (a week) of time between each lesson.

On the weeks that your child’s class is swimming, they will need to wear their bathing costume to school with their PE kit over the top. They also need to bring in a bag: a towel, underwear and googles/cap (should they choose to use one).

Children will change into their PE kit after each lesson and put their towel and bathing suit in their bag to return to school.

Pupils will swim from Monday to Thursday each week. There will be no swimming on Friday. They will walk to and from the pools with either a member of the senior leadership team or their class teacher and a teaching assistant.

If you have any questions or queries about your child’s swimming lesson, please contact the office to arrange a time to meet with either Miss Barnett or Mrs Camplin.

Class Swimming Dates:

  • Year 5: Weeks beginning 19th and 26th June
  • Year 6: Weeks beginning 3rd and 10th July

Biscuits Bytes

Woof!

Wow – where did this week go??? It has been super busy around school!

We have lots more of our new parents and pupils visiting ahead of them starting in either the Preschool, Nursery or Reception classes in September.  I am looking forward to seeing them all again next week when they come in for their Stay and Play session and Information Admission afternoon. I really love meeting new people and they are also friendly!

The playgrounds have been a hive of activity with lots of new summer sports games on offer each day including, Volley Ball, Tennis and Badminton alongside Table Tennis and Basketball. I am really happy about all the ball options – although a shuttlecock is not as much fun for playing with as a ball!

Pupils are really enjoying the new reading area and the drawing and writing tables cannot keep up with the demand of our budding artists and writers – there have been some beautiful pictures of ice creams, mermaids, cars, houses and animals – even a couple of wonderful pictures of me 🙂

I’m not sure what you do after school in the lovely sunny evenings, but I have been having lots of fun visit Forty Hall where they have streams I can splash and cool down in and lots of long grass for hide and seek!

It is going to be hot and sunny this weekend, so if you, like me are going to be out and about at parks, playgrounds or in the garden, please drink plenty of water, put on lots of suncream and wear a hat when outside.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend, enjoy!

Love Biscuit xx

Collective Worship

The whole school attends acts of Collective Worship every day.

  • Mondays and Tuesdays: key stage singing assemblies led by Mr Carden.
  • Wednesdays: Church service led by Graham or Helena, the clergy at St Stephens with St John on Rochester Row. These services are very child-friendly, and Year 6 take a leading role by processing, singing in the choir and reading the Bible readings and prayers.
  • Thursdays: We focus on celebrating achievements, led by a member of SLT, School Council or a class teacher with their class. When a class teacher leads the assembly, their class also recite a piece of poetry they have been learning. We would be very grateful if parents could support their children in learning these poems when it is their turn.
  • Friday: Opportunities for classes to share what they have been learning with their families and the rest of the school.

Class Assemblies

  • Parents are warmly invited to attend class assemblies but please arrive & be seated in the First Floor Hall by 8.50am
  • Dates: 30th June: Year 2 |  14th July: Nursery
  • Year 6’s end of year production will be held in church in July

Community Corner

Graham started church this week with a small rucksack on his back and spoke to the children about what you need to prepare or bring with you if you go on a journey or trip. If you were going somewhere, even just for the day, you would probably pack a bag of things you might need: food, water, change of clothes, money, sun cream, toys to entertain young children, a book etc.

Graham had just come back from a trip around Poland, Czech Republic and Germany but he only took a small rucksack – the children were amazed! But the message of the day was ‘Keep it simple!

We then heard a reading from Matthew 9, when Jesus sent his disciples out to spread his message. He told them not to worry about taking lots of things with them, all they needed to do was explain to people about God’s love and God’s love was all they needed to take with them. The disciples went out to spread the word of hope and love, that was all.

Community Questions:

  • Who has been the most influential person in your life? Do you do or say things the way that they did? Explain. How is wishful thinking different to Christian hope?
  • Christian hope is grounded in the character of God. Often, in the Psalms, the writer says to God: ‘My hope is in you’. It is a hope rooted in the love and faithfulness of God. Hope is not wishful thinking but a firm assurance that God can be relied upon.
  • Christian hope for the future has its guarantee in the resurrection of Jesus. The prophets always spoke of a time to come when the whole world would be restored to God. For Christians, Jesus’ death and resurrection has set this in motion.

Book Group:

St Stephen’s Church plays host to a book group, which would welcome more members from our school community. The next meeting is on Sunday 25th June after the morning church service and they will be travelling back to Victorian times, reading ‘Lady Unknown: Life of Angela Burdett-Coutts’ by Edna Healey, and a poetry book ‘Wild Geese’ by Mary Oliver.

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

We’d love to have you join us for a 30-minute bespoke EYFS tour, where you will have the chance explore our Early Years setting, speak to key staff, and ask any questions regarding admissions and your child starting with us at Burdett-Coutts.

Please contact us to register for our tours which take place every Thursday, with times available from 09:30 – 14:30 during term time.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Nursery:

The children engaged with a paper-based small world set inspired by Julia Donaldson’s ‘Sharing a Shell’ book. They enthusiastically immersed themselves in role-playing the stories, adding their creative twists while consistently incorporating the central theme of sharing and compromising with friends. This imaginative play allowed them to explore the importance of cooperation and empathy, reinforcing the lessons taught in the book. Through their interactions with the characters and the shared storytelling experience, the children developed valuable social skills and a deeper understanding of the significance of collaboration and compromise in building positive relationships.

Reception:

This week in our Writing lessons we have been reading ‘The Storm Whale’. In the story Noi finds a whale washed up on the beach and wants to keep him. He tries to look after him at home but eventually puts the whale back in the sea where he belongs. In our writing we have been looking at speech bubbles and writing in the first person. We thought about what Noi might be telling his dad as they were on their way to put the whale back.

Year 1:

This week in Year 1 we have been finding lots of books in the library with animals to match our Science topic. We retold the story ‘Mittens‘ by Jan Brett and loved listening to ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea‘. We’ve been inspired by these stories to create tiger artwork using paint and tissue paper.

Year 2:

This week, in PSHE, Year 2 have been learning about different life cycles in nature including that of humans. Children reflected on the changes that occur between baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult and old age. Within this, children also discussed how independence, freedoms and responsibility can increase with age. Over the next few weeks, they will learn that change is a natural part of growing up and will explore and discuss the range of emotions that occur with it. They will then look at a range of strategies for managing their feelings and emotions.

Year 3:

This week year 3 have been developing and practicing their sketching in Art lessons. They enjoyed sketching a range of botanical flowers and applying new skills learnt during our lessons such as shading.

Year 4:

This week in Maths we are looking at statistics. We are learning how to interpret a range of data, such as line graphs, pictograms, pie charts and bar charts. We recognise that we need to use our addition and subtraction skills to help us interpret and compare the data. We will then be creating our own graphs after collecting a set of data to use. Congratulations to all of Year 4 for doing exceptionally well in their National Times Tables Test last week. We are very proud of you!

Year 6:

This week in English, we have been busy writing plays scripts to depict an emotional scene from our class text, Wonder. It is a difficult conversation which Jack will had to have with Auggie after he overheard his classmates making cruel comments about his facial deformity. We have tried hard to include a range of punctuation, emotive language, brackets for stage directions and Year 6 spellings.
