Out and About….

Wednesday 28th & Thursday 29th June: Year 6 Workshop with Peter Daniels from the Westminster Archives

This week we were very fortunate to take part in an insightful and inspiring workshop run by Peter Daniels from Westminster Archives. It was a two day project where we learnt about the life of the first black football player for Chelsea Football Club, Paul Canoville. We learnt about the highs and the lows of his life to date, some of which involved signing his professional contract and playing for Chelsea, problems he has experienced with drug addiction, the strength and resilience needed for his rehab which led to him rebuilding his life, and the self-determination and people who helped him to do this.

We were allowed to ask him questions relating to his journey that he shared with us, many of which demonstrated how well we had listened to his story as they were not only reflective but also posed to clarify and deepen our understanding. The overall workshop was thoroughly enjoyed by pupils and staff, and we thank all those who have worked with us.

Wednesday 28th June: Years 4 & 5 Pimlico Music Foundation Art Workshop

A visitor from the Pimlico Musical Foundation came to help create masks and our school emblem for the flag to be used in our production of Noye’s Fludde next Wednesday. We will use these in our rehearsal with other schools next Tuesday at St. Gabriel’s Church, ahead of the final performance on Wednesday 5th July, from 7 to 8pm. Letters and information have already gone home about tickets, and we look forward to seeing you there if you can make it!

Monday 26th June: Year 4 & 5 Curriculum Enrichment Afternoon at Westminster School

Along with 2 other local schools, we were invited to participate in a Curriculum Enrichment afternoon run by Year 11 pupils at Westminster School. Children were allocated 2 activities to try from a selection which included: dance, physics, French and a tour of the school. It was fascinating to see the beautiful buildings; some of us thought they looked like churches and some of us thought they looked like they should have been in the  Harry Potter movie sets. All the workshops were enjoyable, and it was a fun afternoon of learning and meeting other children.

Take a look at what’s been happening in Enrichment Clubs this term:

EYFS & KS1 Craft Club

During craft club this week we collaged animal headdresses. The animal we chose was a dog. We tore up paper that was of different tones of brown into a range of sizes, then using PVA glue, we stuck them into place on our masks. We used different textures of paper to create a 3D effect. We had lots of fun making these!

KS2 Art Club

In Art Club, children have been enthusiastically engaged in creating captivating mixed-media collages featuring close-up animal faces. This project has provided them with a hands-on and immersive artistic experience, fostering a sense of excitement as they witnessed the rapid progress of their artwork with each lesson. They loved tracing and colouring their animal eyes using 3 to 4 analogous oil pastel colours.

Starting at the outer edge of the eyeball with the darkest colour, students coloured a ring of colour always colouring in the direction of the pupil. The next lightest colour was applied in the same way, but slightly touching the first ring of colour in order to have the two colours blend. The third and fourth colour was also applied in the same way.

After collaging strips of paper and sticking on their eyes and nose, it was time for adding definition, dimension and texture to make their eyes and nose harmonise with and look like they ‘belong’ to their collaged background. Throughout this project, children have embraced the opportunity to experiment with an extensive array of mediums and materials, allowing them to explore various artistic techniques such as drawing, blending, painting and collage.

2-year old Pre-school Provision

We are excited to be able to confirm that from September 2023, we will be offering a 2-year old pre-school provision.

If you would like to reserve a space for September 2023, please collect an application pack from the school office as soon as possible and return this, along with your deposit, to secure your place.

Please note that places are limited and we’ve already had a strong response from in-school families. School families have a week to sign up before the offer for places is advertised more widely across the borough.

If you know of friends or family currently on a waiting list for a 2-year old place but who are not attending our school, please ask them to get in touch with us.

School Meals

If you would like your child to move from bringing a packed lunch to having a school meal, you must inform the office at least a week in advance of this change being made. Kindly note pupils are not allowed to alternate between having packed lunches and/or school meals on a daily or weekly basis. If you have any questions, please contact Ms Baker in the school office.

You can find the current school lunch menu here >

If you require a printed copy, please ask at the school office. Should you have any questions about the menu, kindly make an appointment to speak with Miss Barnett.

Are you getting to school on time?

A huge thank you to all of our families who are in school everyday and arrive on time! It is important that your child attends school every day and on time. Arriving late to school is unsettling for children and disrupts the start to their day.

Our school day starts at 09:00, and all pupils need to be in school by 08:55, to ensure that they are ready for learning at 09:00. Teachers are waiting in classes with learning ready to start at this time.

The main pupil entrance (gates) will open at 08:45 and will close at 08:55. After this time parents will need to bring their child/ren via school office. Please ensure your child is in school before 08:55.

From the February Half Term you will need to sign your children in if entering through the office. The time of entry and reason for lateness will be noted.

We are carefully monitoring attendance and punctuality as we have noticed an increasing trend of both becoming a pattern for some families.

Routines are the easiest way to ensure your child attends school on time every day, so try to create good routines for the start of your day, particularly if mornings are hectic in your household.

Try and prepare as much as possible the night before, and ensure that older children are taking much more responsibility for their readiness for school.

Did you know?!

  • 10 minutes late every day = 33 hours lost learning each year!
  • Lateness and absence has a significant impact not only on your child’s learning, but also others, as teachers may have to re-teach late arrivals to ensure they can participate in the lesson.

MIND Parent Online Forum – 12th July

Swimming Lessons for Years 3 – 6

We are delighted to announce that swimming lessons will begin again for pupils in Years 3 – 6 this term. These lessons are an important (and statutory) part of the national curriculum and provide an opportunity for pupils to develop key skills and knowledge about water safety and learning basic swimming skills and strokes. Pupils are issued with certificates at the end of each unit of swimming, which acknowledge the skill level that they have met.

All swimming lessons will take part at the Queen Mothers Sports Centre. Classes will complete their lessons in blocks (8 consecutive lessons over two weeks), instead of one lesson per week (over 8 weeks).

This arrangement ensures pupils have the best chance to consolidate and make the most of their lessons, having the opportunity to build on learning over sequential days, as opposed to having large gaps (a week) of time between each lesson.

On the weeks that your child’s class is swimming, they will need to wear their bathing costume to school with their PE kit over the top. They also need to bring in a bag: a towel, underwear and googles/cap (should they choose to use one).

Children will change into their PE kit after each lesson and put their towel and bathing suit in their bag to return to school.

Pupils will swim from Monday to Thursday each week. There will be no swimming on Friday. They will walk to and from the pools with either a member of the senior leadership team or their class teacher and a teaching assistant.

If you have any questions or queries about your child’s swimming lesson, please contact the office to arrange a time to meet with either Miss Barnett or Mrs Camplin.

Biscuits Bytes

Woof!

It’s Friday again! Wow time flies when you’re having fun and there have been MANY fun events taking place this week in and around school!

Pupils across the school have been out on trips and we have had lots of visitors in school too, who have led interesting and informative workshops. Year 6 have been extremely busy rehearsing for their end of year production (The Lion King), practicing their lines, refining their singing (they sound amazing!) and working on the creation of props and backdrops. It’s going to be fantastic!!

It was great to see all the new parents and pupils; families who are joining us in September or moving up from Nursery to Reception, attending the Nursery and Reception Open Afternoons this week. It was a busy couple of afternoons, with everyone playing wonderfully and having fun exploring new learning spaces.

There has been lots of redecorating works taking place in the EYFS as our new Pre-school Class is taking shape. Plus updates to the new Reception class including brand new furnishings & carpeting, IT provision and furniture being installed. Further works will take place across the summer for the Nursery classroom and the creation of an exciting playroom! Watch this space for further updates.

There are also so many new and busy things happening in the ‘Great Outdoors’ now. During my walks in the evenings, I have seen lots of new life with baby goslings from a breeding pair of Canadian Geese, long tall grasses brimming with insects and butterflies (also great for hide and seek) and lots of ducks and turtles sunbathing in the early evenings.

If you are out and about at the parks this weekend, don’t forget to tell me what you see!

Wishing you all a safe and wonderful weekend 🙂

Love Biscuit xx

Collective Worship

The whole school attends acts of Collective Worship every day.

  • Mondays and Tuesdays: key stage singing assemblies led by Mr Carden.
  • Wednesdays: Church service led by Graham or Helena, the clergy at St Stephens with St John on Rochester Row. These services are very child-friendly, and Year 6 take a leading role by processing, singing in the choir and reading the Bible readings and prayers.
  • Thursdays: We focus on celebrating achievements, led by a member of SLT, School Council or a class teacher with their class. When a class teacher leads the assembly, their class also recite a piece of poetry they have been learning. We would be very grateful if parents could support their children in learning these poems when it is their turn.
  • Friday: Opportunities for classes to share what they have been learning with their families and the rest of the school.

Class Assemblies

  • Parents are warmly invited to attend class assemblies but please arrive & be seated in the First Floor Hall by 8.50am
  • Dates:  14th July: Nursery

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Limited September 2023 places available for Preschool, Nursery & Reception

If you are looking for a Preschool (2-year olds), Nursery (3-year olds) or Reception place for your child from September 2023, please contact the school and make an appointment to join a school tour. We currently have:

  • 5 full-time Preschool places
  • 1 full-time Nursery place available, and 1 part-time place (afternoon)
  • 4 Reception class spaces

We’d love to have you join us for a 30-minute bespoke EYFS tour, where you will have the chance explore our Early Years setting, speak to key staff, and ask any questions regarding admissions and your child starting with us at Burdett-Coutts.

Please contact us to register for our tours which take place every Thursday, with times available from 09:30 – 14:30 during term time.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Nursery:

In Nursery this week, our little chefs had a blast creating ‘rainbow biscuits’! Inspired by the beloved Rainbow Fish book, they followed three-step instructions to make these colourful treats using digestives, icing sugar, and rainbow sprinkles. This activity not only engage their taste buds but also enhanced their developmental skills such as oral processing, short-term memory, and bilateral integration. The children’s creativity shone through as they added a vibrant touch to their biscuits. Well done, Nursery!

Reception:

In our Music lesson this week we had the chance to be a conductor, just like Mr Carden. We took it in turns to lead the class and control who was playing. We had to think about how fast or slow we wanted each other to play and give clear instructions when we wanted the music to stop.

Year 1:

In RE this term, we have continued to learn about Judaism and some of the key practices that take place. We have been learning about Yom Kippur (end of the Jewish year) and Rosh Hashanah. It has been interesting for Year 1 to make connections with special religious celebrations in their own homes, talking about what practices that are the same and those that are different.

Year 2:

In Year 2, we read a new story called ‘The Princess and the White Bear King’. Drawing on a combination of three folk tales from Northern Europe, this beautiful book tells a dark adventure story that explores some powerful ideas and themes. Far away in the distant north, a beautiful princess has a strange encounter with a great white bear who takes her to live in his castle. When she fails to heed a warning and breaks a promise, disaster strikes. The princess then sets out on an impossible journey, taking her east of the sun and west of the moon in the hope that she might redeem herself and break the spell. Children incorporated art into their Writing by pretending to be goldsmiths and creating crowns of the princess’ dream. This inspired them to write a persuasive letter to the King asking him to choose their crown as it is ‘brighter than the sun itself‘ and as fine as the one the princess dreamt about. Children ensured that they used sentence openers, expanded noun phrases and conjunctions to add extra detail to their sentences and to entertain their audience.

Year 3:

This week, Year 3 has been working hard researching and reading all about China. They have been learning all about China’s history, food and busy cities. The above picture shows pupils responding in their own words to the question ‘What is the difference between living in China than here in London?‘ There were some very reflective responses which clearly identified the similarities and differences, linked to customs, practices and key icons.

Year 4:

We have been working hard this week, observing plants for our Art lessons, with wonderful results. We looked at how the famous botanists drew and then used their techniques to create our own very detailed sketches of flowers. We all realised how much concentration and patience this requires! It was a joy to see the children’s faces as they studied the plants through microscopes to help them draw. Watch this space for our Victorian Botanical Sketch Book.

Year 5:

In the last 2 weeks we have been swimming 4 days a week at the Queen Mother Sports Centre on Vauxhall Bridge Road. First, we had a swimming test to put us into groups and then we had lessons every day. Over this time, everyone has gained in confidence in the water and had a great time learning a range of swimming techniques. We are also much quicker at getting changed now too!

Year 6:

This week in Maths, we have been researching the annual salaries for our dream jobs and then looking at the difference between gross income for different wage brackets after tax is deducted. We realised that even though some of the salaries seemed decent, once we had considered the general cost of living, including bills, food and rent, that in fact we would have little spare money. We also spoke about the importance for saving in case appliances in our home broke, holidays, birthdays etc. It was an interesting investigation, and we learnt a lot about how to manage our finances.
