School Reports, Farewells & Welcomes!

Wow, can you believe we are only EIGHT days from the end of our current school year? What a busy and exciting year it has been.

Your child(ren)’s end of year school report was sent home last Friday, and we hope you’ve enjoyed celebrating your child(ren)’s achievement across the year. Enclosed in the report envelope, you will also have found the following documents:

  • A spelling list of the words they should know for the end of their current year, and also the list of the words they will be learning for next year.
  • A copy of the term dates for the next academic year. Please check this carefully before booking any holidays.
  • For Year 2 and Year 6, a copy of your child(ren)’s SATs outcomes
  • For Year 4, a copy of their Times Table Test outcomes

We had a wonderful and uplifting Leavers Service for our Year 6 pupils on Friday afternoon. We wish them all the very best for the adventures and challenges ahead as they embark on their secondary careers.

We are also saying goodbye to several members of staff. I’m sure I speak on everyone’s behalf – along with school staff, governors and trustees – in bidding them the fondest of farewells and the hugest of thanks for all that they have contributed and achieved during their time at Burdett-Coutts.

Leaving our school is:

  • Mrs Camplin, who is taking a well-deserved break from teaching to spend more time with her family. We would like to thank her for her commitment to teaching and learning, her leadership and SENDco support provided to staff and families over the last 17 years.
  • Mrs Lee, who after 12 years at Burdett-Coutts, Mrs Lee is relocating to Leeds with her family. We are hugely appreciative for her commitment to teaching and learning, her leadership and her role in developing literacy across our school. We wish her and her family all the very best with their move and their future endeavours.
  • Miss Mattey, who took her very first steps of her extensive teaching journey here at Burdett-Coutts. She has made the exciting decision to dip her toes into a new school setting, and we wish her all the very best and thank her for her commitment to teaching and learning and her leadership of mathematics across our school.
  • Miss Landrigan, who is returning home to New Zealand to get married. Congratulations and thanks for all your commitment and support to the pupils, families and staff at Burdett-Coutts.
  • Miss Hassan, who despite being with us for only two terms due to a change in Nursery staffing early in the year, has seamlessly fitted into our BC family. Working closely with colleagues in the Early Years team, she has developed and provided many exciting learning opportunities for the young children in her care. We wish her all the best in her future teaching career.

And as we sadly say goodbye to the above, please join me in warmly welcoming the following class teachers to our school:

  • Lillianne Gordan (Nursery)
  • Jenna Finn (Year 1)
  • Charlotte Pollard-Brown (Year 3)
  • Luke Sorkovsky (Year 4)

They will be joining us full time come September but have already been spending time with their classes and participating in handover and transition tasks, with other days planned across July and August.

End of Term Reminders

Parents & carers, please find a few reminders to help our end of term tasks to go as smoothly as possible:

  • All pupil exercise books will be coming home on Friday (19th July). Please send your child to school with either a rucksack (back pack) or bring in a sturdy plastic bag for them to take their books home in.
  • School Library and Reading Books: please check your bookshelves, bedroom and behind the couch for any school library or reading books and return these to school by Friday 19th July.
  • After School Club (6 o’clock club) finishes on Tuesday 23rd July
  • Last day of school before the Summer Holidays is Wednesday 24th July. ALL pupils need to be collected at 13:30.

Summer Holiday Camp

Ready, Set, Go!

A HUGE thank you to all the parents, friends and extended family members who came along to our sports day this week. We had such a FANTASTIC morning of sporting fun and competition. We were extremely lucky with the weather, with all the events completed (including the parents’ race!) before the heavens opened and the rain arrived!

Well done to all our pupils for their demonstration of great sportsmanship and competition. It was wonderful to see (and hear!) the enthusiasm, joy and pride as they participated in a wide range of events.

Thanks also to all school staff for their support and preparation for this event. Your help really made the day go so smoothly! Special thanks to Westminster School and especially to their groundsman, for the use of their wonderful playing fields.

Congratulations to the following pupils (and parents) who took part in all events, and especially the 200m sprint finals. And well done to the parents who excelled in the Parent’s Race, especially Ra’mhi’s (Nursery) Dad and Rayna’s (Year 1) Mum for cross the finish line first!

We look forward to seeing you all next year!

Out and About……

Wednesday 10th July: Years 4 & 5 Trip to Battersea Park
The weather gods were smiling on us for our joint Years 4 & 5 trip to Battersea Park last Wednesday. We even saw a lovely family of ducklings by the lake, they were so sweet. The children had great fun in the adventure playground and enjoyed a picnic lunch next to peaceful fountains. The pigeons and crows were very keen to try our lunches, and everyone did a good job of flapping them away. We were so grateful that it wasn’t raining, it would have made for a miserable outing! The most exciting part of the whole trip was the Thames Clipper back from Battersea, with all the children opting to sit in the open air deck watching the waves out the back of the boat. We’re sure everyone will have had a good night’s sleep on Wednesday after all that walking and playing!

Wednesday 10th July: Year 3 Trip to the Khalsa Jatha Central Gurdwara
We had an amazing time at the Khalsa Jatha Central Gurdwara in Shepherd’s Bush. We have been learning about Sikhism in RE and we really excited to see a Sikh place of worship in real life. We took the bus and arrived in the morning. We took our shoes off and covered our hair as a mark of respect and met Kirin, our guide. The Gurdwara was very beautiful and we heard someone reading from the Guru Granth Sahib and playing traditional music. We learnt so much but the best part was when we got to eat in the Langar (community kitchen). The vegetarian food was delicious, and we all loved it! It is part of Sikh worship to share a meal after praying together, and everyone who cooks the food is a volunteer. We were all very sensible and Miss Mattey and Miss Corinne was very proud of us!

Thursday 11th July: Year 2 trip to the Sealife London Aquarium
Year 2 had an exciting adventure to the Sealife London Aquarium to enhance their understanding of animals, their habitats, and the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans. The children were in awe as they passed through glass tunnels, watching fish and sharks swim above. They loved exploring life under the sea, particularly finding the jellyfish fascinating. They saw many types of fish, including some they had never heard of before!

We observed how some fish get their food, noticed the gills that help them breathe underwater, and saw others that swim to the surface to breathe. However, the highlights of the day were being able to hold shark eggs and ray eggs and seeing the penguins waddle on the ice and dive into the water. Children eagerly shared the facts they had learnt and were thrilled to see these animals up close.

Before heading back to school, the children enjoyed a picnic on the grass in front of the London Eye. As always, they were exemplary Burdett-Coutts ambassadors demonstrating the values of our school.

EYFS Art Installation: Donations required

We are building a new art installation featuring the wonderful creations of our Early Years children, and to bring this project to life, we are seeking donations of spare photo frames.

Whether you have simple, ornate, wooden, or metal frames, all styles are welcome and greatly appreciated. We are seeking frames no smaller than 4 x 6 inches, and up to A2 size (approximately 16.5 x 23.4 inches) to help present our children’s artwork!

Your generosity will help us create an inspiring and colourful display for our young artists, allowing us to beautifully showcase their artwork and celebrate their creativity.

Please drop off any frames you’d like to donate at the school’s front office. Thank you for supporting our artists and making this installation a success!

Swimming Lessons for Years 3 – 6

We are delighted to announce that swimming lessons will begin again this term, for pupils in Years 3 to 6.

These lessons are an important (and statutory) part of the national curriculum and provide an opportunity for pupils to develop key skills and knowledge about water safety and learning basic swimming skills and strokes.

Pupils are issued with certificates at the end of each unit of swimming, which acknowledge the skill level that they have met.

All swimming lessons will take part at the Queen Mothers Sports Centre. Classes will complete their lessons in blocks (6 consecutive lessons over two weeks), instead of one lesson per week (over 6 weeks).

This arrangement ensures pupils have the best chance to consolidate and make the most of their lessons, with the opportunity to build on learning over sequential days, as opposed to having a week between each lesson.

On the weeks that your child’s class is swimming, they will need to wear their bathing costume to school with their PE kit over the top. They also need to bring in a bag; a towel, underwear and goggles, plus a cap (if they choose to use one).

Children will change into their PE kit after each lesson and put their towel and bathing suit in their bag to return to school.

Pupils will swim on Tuesday, Wednesday & Fridays of each week. They will walk to and from the pools with their class teacher and a teaching assistant.

If you have any questions or queries about your child’s swimming lesson, please contact the office to arrange a time to meet with a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Class Swimming Dates:

  • Year 6: Weeks beginning 8th & 15th July  (no swimming on Friday 19th due to a school trip)

Accelerated Reader Program

We are very excited to announce that we are now part of the Accelerated Reader program, for children in Years 1 to 6.

Accelerated Reader encourages children to read regularly, while ensuring that they bring home a book appropriate to their reading level. There are three steps to the program:

1. Pupils complete a star assessment which informs us of their reading level
2. They choose a reading book from the library, appropriate to their reading level
3. After they’ve read the book, they complete an online quiz about the it. The children earn points for the quizzes that they complete.

Pupils can log into the Accelerated Reader portal @ https://global-zone61.renaissance-go.com/welcomeportal/2243804

They can also log in by clicking on the Accelerated Reader link found at the top right hand corner of our website (in between Staff Login and Sooper Books).

Please click the image below for information about Accelerated Reader, or click here for a PDF >

Cashless Payments: Parent Portal on Arbor

On Monday 8th January, parents were sent a welcome email from Arbor via the school office email account. Please read this carefully, as it contains vital information of the steps required to download the Arbor app, which is now live and ready to use for our school.

Once you have downloaded the app and followed the setup steps, you will be able to pay online for the following:

  • Breakfast Club
  • After School Club (6 o’clock club)
  • School Trips and Visits
  • Nursery Extended Day Fees
  • Preschool Fees

You will also be able to view your child’s details held by the school, such as their attendance record  and the named adults allowed to collect them from school.  After the Easter Break, you will also be able to sign up and pay for Extended School Day (Enrichment) Clubs.

We understand that while paying online is the preferred option for many of our families, those wishing to continue paying by cash will still be able to do via the school office.

  • If you’re unable to download or log into the Arbor App, please contact the school office.
  • We hope that this will be a smooth transition, but as is often the case with new technology, there may be some disruptions so please bear with us during this process.

School Meals

If you would like your child to move from bringing a packed lunch to having a school meal, you must inform the office at least a week in advance of this change being made. Kindly note pupils are not allowed to alternate between having packed lunches and/or school meals on a daily or weekly basis. If you have any questions, please see a member of the school admin staff at the school office.

You can find the current school lunch menu here >

If you require a printed copy, please ask at the school office. Should you have any questions about the menu, kindly make an appointment to speak with Miss Barnett.

February 2024 half term vouchers for pupils eligible for FSM are available for collection from the school office.

Are you getting to school on time?

We have noticed several pupils are consistently late to school each day. It is essential that every child arrives at school by 08:45 so that they are in class and ready to learn at 09:00. If your punctuality has slipped recently, please ensure that you take steps to arrive in school on time after the February half term break.

Why good school attendance matters: Missing a few days of school here and there may not seem a big deal, but research shows that it can have a significant impact on children’s learning.

Children who miss a substantial amount of school fall behind their peers, and struggle to catch up. Most of the work they miss is never made up, which can lead to big gaps in their learning.

  • Poor attendance often starts at primary school and children who fall into this pattern are likely to under-achieve at secondary school.
  • Pupils who miss between 10 and 20% of school (that’s 19 – 38 days per year) stand only a 35% chance of achieving five or more good GCSEs, compared to 73% of those who miss fewer than 5% of school days.
  • An attendance rate of 95% is generally considered good; this allows for children to miss 9.5 days across the school year.
  • Persistent absence (PA) is defined as an attendance rate of 90% or below.
  • All pupils are expected to have an attendance rate of 95% or higher.

Attendance class of the week: Each week we will be celebrating the class with the highest attendance levels.

Did you know?!

  • 10 minutes late every day = 33 hours lost learning each year!
  • Lateness and absence has a significant impact not only on your child’s learning, but also others, as teachers may have to re-teach late arrivals to ensure they can participate in the lesson.
  • Remember pupils need to be in school by 08:55.
  • The pupil entrance gates open at 08:40.

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Preschool, Nursery & Reception Admissions

We have the following availability for places in our Early Years provision from September 2024:

Reception class:

  • 4 places

  • 3 full-time places
  • 2 part-time places (afternoon)

 Preschool (2-year olds)

  • 3 full-time places (1 from January 2025)

If you are looking for a Preschool, Nursery or Reception place for your child we’d love to have you join us for a 30-minute bespoke EYFS tour. Here, you’ll have the chance explore our Early Years setting, speak to key staff and ask any questions regarding admissions and your child starting with us at Burdett-Coutts.

Contact us to register for our tours which take place every Thursday, with times available from 10:30 – 14:30 during term time.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Preschool:

In Preschool, we have been continuing with our lovely book, ‘Hooray for Fish’. The children have been enjoying exploring the wonders found under the sea. We have been creating our own boats and exploring the bottom of the sea through various fun activities.

Nursery:

In Nursery, we continued exploring the story ‘Billy’s Bucket’. The children had a wonderful time using their imaginations to discover the treasures hidden in their own magical buckets. We also enjoyed a creative art project, where the children crafted their very own seaside scenes using shaving foam, paint and PVA glue. It was a delightful experience filled with fun!

Reception:

This week, Reception’s mathematicians were plotting their routes to school through map drawing. They were challenged to plot out their route and incorporate the perfect positioning of the landmarks they see along the way. The children had so much fun doing this activity they collaborated to make a giant map. As they were all coming from different directions, they might have created the whole map of Westminster!

Year 1:

Last week, Year 1 learnt about the many places different types of animals live such as the forests, mountains, oceans, rivers etc. We created some beautiful jungle art using watercolour paints and talked about some of the animals we might find in the jungle if we were to visit one.

Year 2:

As Mathematicians, Year 2 have been learning all about money. They have been identifying and recognising different coins and notes as well as learning their values. By using their understanding of place value, addition and subtraction, they have calculated the total value of various sets of notes and coins. Additionally, they have discovered multiple ways to create the same amount of money using both concrete resources and pictorial representations. This practical, hand-on approach has significantly improved their understanding and skills in managing money.

Year 3:

In Art, Year 3 have been drawing plants from around the school. We have learnt about light and dark, shading and texture and we are now putting this into practice by drawing plants and natural objects.

Year 4:

This week Year 4 has continued with our science sound unit. We made string telephones to explore how sounds travel over a distance. After testing out our telephones, we discussed how the sound energy of the vibrations from talking into the cup pass along the string. We found that the sound of the person’s voice is louder through the string than it is through the air over the same distance.

Year 5:

For our class assembly, we presented information we had discovered about workhouses in the Victorian Era, and the plight of the destitute and poor living on the streets of London. We talked about the sad fact that homelessness is still a terrible problem on our streets nearly two hundred years later. As a class, we discussed possible solutions and designed posters to draw attention to the problem. We all realised just how lucky we are to have a roof over our heads.

Year 6:

This week in Maths we have been focusing on budgeting and the importance of managing our money through real life scenarios. We really enjoyed booking a hypothetical holiday. We used line graphs to explore the best time of year to visit different places based on their climate and researched the difference in cost for accommodation on various board basis. We also considered time differences from the UK and the impact that this might have on our holiday. We applied many different mathematical skills that we have learnt throughout the year and were really engaged in the task.
