Year 4 Trip to The British Museum

Monday 25th November: Our trip to the British Museum gave us the opportunity to learn more about Mayan civilisation. We participated in a seminar about the Yucatec tribe, a tribe located in the central lowlands of Maya. We learnt about their daily life and saw first hand, some of the artefacts they created. The students loved looking at the beautiful jade creations and the jewellery that they made.

Parent Teacher Meetings

A HUGE THANK YOU to all our parents and carers who attended their Parent-Teacher meetings this week. It was wonderful to see everyone and to have the opportunity to share the learning journeys that the children have been on this term.

We hope that Years 1 – 6 parents & carers enjoyed discussing the work samples that your children had selected to share. We also hope that the work samples and floor books from our Early Years classes were helpful in demonstrating some of the fantastic learning our youngest pupils have been engaged in across the Autumn term.

Thank you for your support with our Christmas Craft fundraising initiative that also took place that evening. If you missed this opportunity to purchase your child’s Christmas Craft, please don’t worry. You will have another chance to purchase this at our school’s Christmas Fair on Wednesday 18th December.

Your ongoing commitment and support of your child(ren)’s learning are very much appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to join us on this occasion.

WINTER IS HERE!

Please ensure that all children wear a jacket to school, and have a hat. Gloves and scarves are optional, but are highly recommended as it starts to get much colder.

All pupils should now be wearing their full winter uniform and no longer in their summer uniform options, including PE uniform.

Please ensure all items of clothing including jumpers and sweaters are named!

Many thanks for your continued support.

Woof….

Happy Friday everyone 🐶 what an exciting couple of weeks we’ve had!

Tinsel, glitter, paint; you name it! Arts & crafts activities have been taking place across the school over the last two weeks. My contribution has been 🐾🐾 paw prints on paper. I’ve had SO MUCH fun!

Last week ALL CLASSES took part in our Christmas Display Day 🎄 We hope you had the opportunity to view the amazing installations during this week’s Parents-Teacher Evening.

This year’s theme is The 12 Days of Christmas, and I must say, it’s definitely been very ‘Christmas-sy’ in school 🎄 with Santa’s Workshop in the main foyer, a ‘warm crackling fire’ in the office entrance, and festive decoration EVERYWHERE. I really wish I could spend more time lying in front of the fire, it’s doing such a great job in keeping my 🐾 warm!

The other thing I have noticed this week is a lot of singing. Admittedly, there’s always lots of singing in school but there really is more now. Somehow Mr Carden has taken our usual singing to a whole new level, and there’s so much more humming and singing down the corridors than normal.

Maybe it has something to do with the many rehearsals taking place for the nativity plays, with the costumes, acting and singing all taking centre stage?

I must say that I’ve yet to be given my costume. Personally I think I would make a great camel 🐶 Maybe I should speak with Miss Polly to see if she’ll come and see me next week for a fitting.

Well done to everyone who participated in the KS2 Nativity performances today. What an amazing achievement, and a special congratulation to our Year 3 pupils. You were shining stars of todays performance, and we are all very proud of you.

Thank you also to the School Choir and pupils from Years 4, 5 & 6 for their performances. You all sounded amazing and filled our hearts and heads with wonderful memories 🙂

I wonder how you all remembered all your lines? Maybe it has something to do with all that extra singing in school.

I know how hard all the staff have been working with pupils over the past few weeks, so a huge thank you to everyone for the energy, love and music you give.

A super big ‘Woof‘ to Mr Carden, to say thank you for giving us the ‘musical icing’ on the cake. You really bring that special magic to our shows 🎶🐶

Have a wonderful weekend,

Love Biscuit x

Collection Times

Parents and carers, please ensure that your child/ren are collected on time each day.

We are experiencing a high volume of late collection, especially with pupils in our After School Club. Kindly note that the club finishes at 6pm, so you will need to be here to collect your children prior to this time.

We appreciate that there are occasions when you may be delayed. On these occasions, please contact the school office to inform them of your expected time of arrival.

Regrettably, late fees will be issued to families who persistently collect their child/ren after their allocated finishing times.

If you are having trouble with childcare for any reason, please make an appointment to meet with a member of the Schools Leadership Team (Ms Barnett & Mrs Li Rosi) or the school Pastoral Support Manager (Mrs Deary).

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Preschool:

Our creative preschoolers have been hard at work crafting a stunning Christmas board for The 12 Days of Christmas. Their selected day features a magical winter scene. The children helped paint a blue sky backdrop, added sparkling glitter for a snowy, Christmas-card effect, and helped place beautifully sewn birds crafted by Miss Gordon. They especially loved singing along to The 12 Days of Christmas, learning about each day as they brought their masterpiece to life.

We’ve also been exploring our story Dear Zoo in such a fun way! Each day, the children open a parcel from the zoo to find a surprise animal just like in the book. Before opening the box, we read a describing word like “too tall” and take guesses about which animal it might be. It’s been an exciting way for the kids to practice using describing words and build their vocabulary, while also enjoying the surprise of discovering new animals!

Nursery:

Nursery has had so much fun getting into the Christmas spirit! The children worked together to make a beautiful display of the Five Golden Rings. They loved helping with sticking, painting, and decorating. We also made some lovely Christmas crafts. The children created reindeer ball balls to take home, which they were very proud of. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity and excitement as we prepare for the holiday season.

Last week, the children had an exciting time during outdoor learning as they took part in an obstacle course! They practiced using their arms to help with balance and navigated the course with confidence. It was a wonderful way for them to build their physical skills while having lots of fun outdoors.

Reception:

This week, Reception got into the festive spirit by writing letters to Santa! Using their phonics knowledge, the children worked hard to sound out words and create letter strings, building their confidence in early writing skills. These letters are not just adorable, they’re an important step in developing phonetic awareness and communication. And yes, we’re sealing them in envelopes and sending them off to the North Pole. Santa’s going to be impressed!

In Reception, we’ve been boldly going where no class has gone before by exploring number bonds to 5! With astronauts, stars, and clever little numeric hands as our guides, the children discovered all the ways to make five. It’s been a blast watching them consolidate their learning in provision and show off their composition skills. Who knew maths and creativity could be such stellar companions?

Year 1:

We have been busy crafting beautiful star ornaments to celebrate Christmas! With glittering colours and plenty of creativity, the children have had so much fun designing their own decorations, learning about shapes, patterns, and the joy of crafting together. It’s been a heartwarming experience watching the classroom fill with laughter and holiday cheer, reminding us of all the magic of the season!

Year 1 have been doing an amazing job writing character descriptions of Beegu, using a variety of adjectives to bring the character to life. The children have really embraced the challenge, describing Beegu’s appearance, feelings, and personality with detail. Their creative and thoughtful descriptions show how well they’re grasping the power of adjectives to create vivid images with words!

Year 2:

Year 2 embraced creativity and teamwork to craft a beautiful display for this year’s The 12 Days of Christmas theme. Our class proudly represented ‘8 Maids a-milking‘ and the entire day was filled with fun, imagination and collaboration. We started by creating the background, layering shades of blue for a starry night sky, complete with golden stars and a glowing textured moon. The fields below came alive with different colours of felt to give the scene depth and texture. The centrepiece of our display was the number 8, formed by two wreaths made from pom poms. Our cows added plenty of charm! Using golf balls as the base, the children painted and decorated them with googly eyes, felt ears and noses, creating unique and quirky characters. For the 8 maids, the children experimented with colour and creativity. They decorated coffee filters with washable felt tips, creating beautiful patterns, and then used pipettes to carefully add water. Watching the colours blend and bleed was like magic! Once dried, the coffee filters became colourful dresses for pipe cleaner maids, each holding a couple of milk buckets. Throughout the day, the classroom was filled with the sound of Christmas carols, laughter and the joy of working together to create something special. The children showed incredible teamwork, creativity and attention to detail, making this project a true celebration of the Christmas spirit.

In Maths, we have been learning how to add two 2-digit numbers, progressing to additions where we need to exchange 10 ones for 1 ten. We began by using Base 10 and pictorial representations to deepen our understanding of exchanging and place value. Starting with the ones before moving to the tens, we discussed why this order is important and used key mathematical vocabulary such as tens, ones, and exchange to explain our thinking. Building on this, we moved to the abstract column method to improve our fluency and accuracy in setting out calculations. We have also been developing our reasoning skills by discussing the strategies we use and considering why they are efficient.

Year 3:

We had a fantastic day working on our 12 Days of Christmas display board, with ‘9 Ladies Dancing’. Which we did it with a twist by portraying 9 disco dancing ladies on a dance floor at a Christmas disco! We drew the ladies, created trees from collage materials and the magical ingredient for all that sparkle, was lots and lots of glitter!

Year 3 have also been working hard on creating their own comics! We are writing about how Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered, in 6-8 simple comic book sections. This has been a challenge, but we are rising to the occasion! We are combining the knowledge we have learnt in History with our writing focus, using speech marks (also known as inverted commas or 66/99). We have learnt this tricky piece of punctuation in a range of different activities over the last couple of weeks and are getting good at using them! Our week has also been full of nativity rehearsals so we can be ready for next week, and almost everyone has memorised the lines. We are so excited to share this with you!

Year 4:

For our Christmas display, we were given the 10th Day of Christmas, and ‘10 Lords Leaping’. The students paired up to design and decorate a lord. All the children showed amazing creative flair as they added their own unique touches to their lords. The whole class was very pleased and proud with the outcome.

During maths lessons this term we have been learning about multiplication and division. We have explored certain patterns across different times tables as well as how to work out division problems using inverse operation equations. Particular ‘lightbulb’ moments have been when exploring the pattern of the 12 and 9 times tables, and the relationships between the 3, 6 and 9.

Year 5:

We are currently reading Odysseus, which is based on Homer’s classical poem. This book has inspired some beautiful artwork that the children have tried to draw in the style of the book’s illustrators. We have also written recounts of a chapter in the first person as a crew member and are planning to write narrative poems about Odysseus’ journey home after The Trojan Wars. The children are thoroughly enjoying this adventure packed tale. Ask them to tell you about some of the mythical creatures they have encountered so far.

We are also continuing to learn about Ancient Greek civilisation this term, comparing the two main city states of Sparta and Athens, and looking at their different forms of government, the jobs they did and how they lived. Life then was very different for women and girls, and for men and boys too. We were surprised to learn that Spartan boys went to military school to train to become soldiers at the age of seven! They could not leave the army until the age of thirty, when they were expected to marry. Girls were also trained to fight and were expected to be tough and strong. This was very different from Athenian women, whose life was centred around the home.

Year 6:

We enjoyed recreating our version of twelve drummers drumming from the traditional carol, ‘The 12 Days Of Christmas‘. The drummers represent the twelve doctrinal points of the Apostles’ Creed and The 12 Days of Christmas is the period in Christian theology that marks the span between the birth of Christ and the coming of the Magi, the three wise men. We created our own mini drums which we have hung around our wreath on the number twelve door, with a nutcracker playing the larger drum.

In our Art lessons this term we have been looking at images of Winston Churchill and have discussed how they portray his character. We have tried hard to use guidelines, form and shading to create a well-proportioned sketch. After practising the features of the face at the appropriate size, we then added further details in the eyes, nose and mouth. We are proud of our finished work!
