Book Fair Reading Competition
Get Snapped Reading & WIN a £5 Book Fair voucher!
Our annual book fair will take place from Friday 28th March to Friday 4th April. To create a buzz around it there will be a competition from Nursery to Year 6 to promote our children’s love of reading and the vast number of reading opportunities that we all have in our daily lives.
To enter the competition, all pupils need to do is to send in a photograph of themselves reading anything – a favourite book, comic, recipe, menu, instructions, signs etc – and anywhere, at home, at play, or even out and about.
All photographs will be displayed in classrooms and reading areas around school and all submissions will be put into a draw to win a £5 Book Fair voucher! There are 5 vouchers to be won, and the lucky winners will be announced in assembly on Monday 24th March.
Due to the large numbers of photos we hope to receive, we would really appreciate it if photographs could be printed off and brought into class. If this is not possible, photos can be emailed to office@burdettcoutts.co.uk
We look forward to seeing all your lovely photos, and thank you for your support.
An Evening at the Royal Festival Hall – School Choir News

On Wednesday 12 March, 19 members of the Choir Club across Years 6, 5, 4 and 3, were invited by Westminster School to sing in a concert at the Royal Festival Hall. We sang a piece by Vivaldi, in Latin, called Dixit Dominus. It is quite long and extremely difficult with many fast notes.
The concert was conducted by Mr. Tim Garrard, Director of Music of Westminster School, and we sang with other children from his school and from other schools in our district. Burdett-Coutts was the only primary school invited to sing.
It was exciting to be performing with a large orchestra playing, and to see hundreds of people come into the massive concert hall to listen to us. The lights on the stage were dazzlingly bright and we knew that we were being watched by many, many people. We are enormously privileged to be invited to be part of musical events like this in one of the biggest concert halls in our country.

Science Week Activities

As part of Science Week, Years 5 and 6 took part in an engaging and exciting workshop run by Imperial College. Pupils met a real life inventor and learned about ‘The Great Exhibition‘ in Crystal Palace in 1851.
They worked collaboratively to create their own prototypes for inventions which they showcased at the end of the workshop. Some of these included an automatic fish feeder, an innovative robot which will do your household chores, and a walking stick for the blind that vibrates when objects are close by.
It was lovely to see the children working so well within their teams and being so engrossed in their learning.
A massive thank you to the scientists Alex and Hayley who ran the workshop. The winning invention will be displayed at the Great Exhibition Road Festival on 7-8 June 2025.

Easter Bonnet Competition
Spring has sprung!
Although it has been cooler this week, the🌼daffodils are blooming and the cherry blossoms 🌸 🌺 are looking lovely around our streets and parks. Although maybe not so much fun if you suffer from hayfever!
Our Easter Bonnet competition is launching on Monday, so fire up your imagination and get crafting.
Parents, please only provide essential assistance to your child’s Easter Bonnet design. As before there will be a Parent Entry table again, so please feel free to join in with the fun, by submitting your own Easter Bonnet so you can work along side your child.
Happy Crafting 🙂 🐣
Red Nose Day

This Friday 21st March is Red Nose Day!
It’s an extra special celebration this year, as it will be the 40th anniversary of Comic Relief, making it a wonderful occasion to celebrate! That’s 40 years of raising money and supporting many thousands of charities.
The theme this year will be Celebration – What Makes Us 😊 Pupils can come dressed up as any character they wish, theme, hero, inspirational figure – as long as it’s an outfit that makes them happy!
To wear a costume/outfit on this non-uniform day all pupils will need to bring in £2 donation. This will go towards this year’s focus of supporting those in need during the current cost of living challenge and related core issues such as food poverty and homelessness.
During lunch time, pupils will be able to partake in two games, at a cost of 50p each. These will be Pin the Nose on Biscuit 🐶 (Don’t worry – it’s a photo!) and Guess the Red Sweets in the Jar 😋 We will also be selling cupcakes at the end of the day for £1. These will be available to purchase when you collect your children.
Thank you for supporting this important fundraising event.
We look forward to seeing everyone’s ‘HAPPY’ costumes and outfits next Friday😊
Biscuits Bytes

Woof woof everyone!
Wow what a busy week it has been in school! There was an exciting trip out to a farm (although I really wish I could have gone with Nursery), amazing singing taking place in school and also at the Royal Festival Hall.
I don’t know about you, but I am loving the longer days ☀️ I can get to the park after school with it being light enough to be off the lead, running and chasing the a ball, which is so much better than being on the lead and doing street walks. All I can do then is bark at the foxes, which I must admit I love to do!
I had an amazing time celebrating my birthday last Sunday. I was very lucky, and throughly spoilt to receive some lovely gifts.
I also spent the whole day out at Wimpole Estate which is a lovely National Trust Property near Cambridge. They had an 🐣 Easter Egg Trail and many baby animals to see in the farm area. I spent most of my time 🐶 running around the fields and swimming in the lake. We also had a picnic YUM 😋
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and see you next week 🐶

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.
As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.
For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:
- Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.
Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.
We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.
This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.
- If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.
Preschool:

This week, Preschoolers got their hands dirty and their senses engaged as they explored gardening! Inspired by our new core text, Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert, the children have been smelling flowers, watering plants, and observing nature up close. Through these hands-on experiences, they’re learning about plant life cycles, responsibility, and the beauty of colours in nature, just like in our story. Gardening also strengthens their sensory skills, fine motor development, and curiosity about the world around them.
Nursery:

What an exciting week we’ve had in Nursery! Our trip to Vauxhall City Farm was a fantastic experience; the children loved meeting the farm animals and even got the chance to feed the goats and sheep! It was a truly memorable day for everyone. Back in Nursery, we brought our storytelling to life using the tuff tray to retell ‘What the Ladybird Heard‘. The children had so much fun recreating the story and exploring the characters through play.

Reception:

Reception has been buzzing with excitement as we dive into our current book, “The Bog Baby” by Jeanne Willis! Inspired by our reading, we transformed into miniature naturalists and ventured to our playground’s petite pond garden armed with magnifying glasses and investigative tools. The children discovered firsthand what makes a bog baby special, and eagerly searched for tiny creatures hiding in the murky waters. With scientific precision (and just a bit of gleeful inquisitiveness), our young explorers poked, observed, and marveled at the microscopic world living right under their noses. Who knew such big discoveries could be found in such a small pond?
Year 1:

Year 1 are learning all about the Four Seasons and the different types of weather that we have in each season. They have made weather wheels to help them talk about sunny, rainy, and snowy days. They also created season wheels to learn about spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
Year 2:

As Mathematicians, Year 2 have been busy exploring the concept of mass. They began by revisiting their prior learning, comparing objects using the language ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’, and using cubes as a non-standard unit of measurement. This helped them develop an understanding of weight before being introduced to standard units. Pupils were introduced to grams and kilograms, using real weights and balance scales to deepen their understanding. They worked on estimating mass by comparing everyday objects to known weights. Reading scales accurately was a key focus and they worked hard to understand how to interpret values, even when the pointer landed between numbers. By the end of the week, they applied their knowledge to problem-solving activities, using bar models to decide which calculations to use.
Year 3:

Year 3 have been writing scripts with a focus on using inverted commas correctly to indicate direct speech. We have learnt how to use them effectively and have added our own speech to the advert, Megacity. We also used brackets to indicate non-speech and any movements that the characters did. In Maths, we have started calculating perimeter – we now know that it is the length of all the sides of a shape added together!
Year 4:

A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to our class assembly last week. It was fantastic to see you there and everyone will agree the children did an amazing job! Some of Year 4 have caught the presenting bug and are now writing their own extracurricular presentations. We’ve already had some fascinating ones on internet safety and the process of chocolate production. In Writing, we’ve wrapped up our invention adverts and have now moved on to autobiographies. Soon, we’ll be writing our own as Charlie Bucket. To get into the character, we took turns “hot seating” as Charlie in front of a background of his home, with the rest of the class acting as interviewers. It was such a fun activity and really brought the story to life! We’re looking forward to more exciting lessons ahead, and seeing more half term projects coming in!
Year 5:

Last week we celebrated World Book Day, and the range of costumes were absolutely amazing. We had a fun lesson with Year 1; being their role models as we read, wrote and drew the Rainbow Fish. This week we are completing our Maths unit on decimals, fractions and percentages. It’s been great to see pupils making connections between them all. Be sure to quiz them on the decimal equivalent for 10%, 1% and 50%. On Tuesday, we had visitors from The Great Exhibition and worked with Year 6, which was a lot of fun!
Year 6:

This week in Maths, we have been multiplying and dividing decimals and applying this knowledge to solving real life reasoning problems. To multiply decimals, we do so just like whole numbers. We count the number of digits behind the decimal in both numbers we are multiplying, and make sure our answer has the same number of digits after the decimal. We have also been practising rounding decimals to one and two decimal places in fluent in five to help us with this.
