Book Fair Reading Competition

Get Snapped Reading & WIN a £5 Book Fair voucher!

Our annual book fair will take place from Friday 28th March to Friday 4th April. To create a buzz around it there will be a competition from Nursery to Year 6 to promote our children’s love of reading and the vast number of reading opportunities that we all have in our daily lives.

To enter the competition, all pupils need to do is to send in a photograph of themselves reading anything – a favourite book, comic, recipe, menu, instructions, signs etc – and anywhere, at home, at play, or even out and about.

All photographs will be displayed in classrooms and reading areas around school and all submissions will be put into a draw to win a £5 Book Fair voucher! There are 5 vouchers to be won, and the lucky winners will be announced in assembly on Monday 24th March.

Due to the large numbers of photos we hope to receive, we would really appreciate it if photographs could be printed off and brought into class. If this is not possible, photos can be emailed to office@burdettcoutts.co.uk

We look forward to seeing all your lovely photos, and thank you for your support.

Easter Bonnet Competition

Spring has sprung!

Although it has been cooler this week, the🌼daffodils are blooming and the cherry blossoms 🌸 🌺  are looking lovely around our streets and parks. Although maybe not so much fun if you suffer from hayfever!

Our Easter Bonnet competition is launching on Monday, so fire up your imagination and get crafting.

Parents, please only provide essential assistance to your child’s Easter Bonnet design. As before there will be a Parent Entry table again, so please feel free to join in with the fun, by submitting your own Easter Bonnet so you can work along side your child.

Happy Crafting 🙂 🐣

Out and About….

Reception had a fantastic visit to Vauxhall City Farm last week, where they took part in a fascinating Mini Beast Workshop before exploring the farm on a self-guided tour. During the workshop, the children worked together to create habitats for mini beasts using natural materials they found around the farm. This hands-on activity encouraged them to think about what different creatures need to survive and thrive, an important link to our learning about animals this term.

The trip ties beautifully with our core text, Bog Baby by Jeanne Willis. Just like the children in Bog Baby learn how to care for their mysterious creature, Reception are exploring how to look after real-life “bug babies” and understand the importance of respecting and protecting nature. The children were thoroughly engaged throughout the day, asking thoughtful questions and showing so much care and curiosity — a true reflection of their growing connection to the natural world!

Run Kids Run 2025

We are thrilled to announce that once again, we have registered to participate in Run Kids Run on Sunday 8th June 2025 in Battersea ParkRun Kids Run is a registered charity helping primary school communities connect with long term corporate benefactors, through a fun running event that promotes a healthy body and mind, while fundraising for our school!

How does it work?
All pupils from Nursery to Year 6 can register to compete in this fundraising event. Nursery & Reception will complete a 1km run, with a parent, and Years 1 – 6 will complete a 2km run. Older siblings can also take part, making it a fun day for all the family.

Then get training and fundraising! After the Easter Break, we will offer an in-school (for pupils only) running club as part of the Summer Term Extended School Day Menu of options. A Just Giving page will also be set up, making donations and sponsorships easy for everyone.

Then on Sunday 8th June, bring your child/ren to Battersea Park from 2 – 4pm. The children will run their races and on completion, will receive an exclusive medal and healthy snack.

You can seek sponsorship from as many friends, family & neighbours as possible, as every donation will go towards raising funds for our school.

Official registration forms will be online following the Easter Break but in the meantime, a preliminary sign-up sheet will be in school office from Monday 24th March. This is for parents/pupils to indicate their intention to participate, as well as to let us know how many are attending the running club after the Easter Break.

Our Corporate Sponsor:
In 2024, when we were selected to join this wonderful initiative, we were partnered with OPLM (Old Park Lane Management).

Like us, they are excited to be working in collaboration with our school community to bring about positive changes, through a vibrant and ambitious partnership for the benefit of the young people and wider groups who live in our local community.

OPLM will be supporting us with various whole-school projects, starting with School Council visits to their Millbank construction site, and a collaborative art project to design images for the hoarding, plus other opportunities for our pupils’ artwork to take centre stage!

Their representatives will be leading a whole-school assembly before the Easter break, where they will introduce themselves, their roles, industry and the construction project they’re currently working. We will keep you updated, as projects and visits develop and take place.

WINTER IS HERE!

Please ensure that all children wear a jacket to school, and have a hat. Gloves and scarves are optional, but are highly recommended as it starts to get much colder.

All pupils should now be wearing their full winter uniform and no longer in their summer uniform options, including PE uniform.

Please ensure all items of clothing including jumpers and sweaters are named!

Many thanks for your continued support.

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.

As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.

For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
  3. Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
  4. Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.

Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.

Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.

We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.

This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.

  • If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.

Preschool:

This week our Preschoolers have been learning all about the life cycle of a plant. To bring their learning to life, they planted grass seeds in cups to create their very own “grass heads“. Through this activity, the children learnt what plants need to grow and practiced responsibility by watering and observing their grass heads daily. We can’t wait to see our grass heads grow wild hair in the coming days!

Nursery:

This week in Nursery, we welcomed some exciting new friends – 10 little caterpillars! The children have been very engaged, observing them closely each day and noticing all the amazing changes as the caterpillars grow bigger and stronger. We’ve been talking about what caterpillars need to survive and how they will eventually turn into butterflies. Alongside this, we have been learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly, exploring each stage from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally, butterfly. The children have enjoyed sharing their ideas and making predictions about what might happen next!

Reception:

In Reception, we explored the mischievous world of leprechauns with the story How to Trap a Leprechaun, in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Inspired by the tale, the children worked together as a team to design and build their own leprechaun traps – and what a creative effort it was! The children began by writing out a plan and carefully selecting their materials: cardboard boxes, a stick, some rope, and a sprinkle of glitter and “gold” to entice our elusive guest. They demonstrated fantastic teamwork and problem-solving skills as they built their traps, carefully positioning them around the classroom with high hopes of catching a leprechaun.

Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the leprechaun managed to slip away, but not before leaving behind a cheeky letter to let us know just how close we had come. Even though we didn’t catch him this time, the children’s creativity, collaboration, and excitement were magical to see. Who knows, maybe next year we’ll finally outsmart him!

Year 1:

On Monday, Year 1 explored the fun traditions linked with celebration of St. Patrick’s Day! They learnt about leprechauns, shamrocks, and the colour green while completing a range of exciting activities. It was a day filled with creativity and fun.

Year 2:

Year 2 have been working as Scientists this term, to explore the topic of Animals, including Humans. They began by learning about animal young and comparing them to adults, observing how animals change and grow over time. They were introduced to the life cycles of several common animals, including humans, and looked closely at how humans change as they grow, drawing on their own experiences and observations. Children also learnt about the three basic needs for animal survival – water, food, and air. They applied this knowledge, along with research from secondary sources, to suggest thoughtful ways to care for pets. To conclude the unit, children will explore healthy lifestyles, discussing the importance of exercise, healthy eating and hygiene. They will develop their ‘working scientifically‘ skills by investigating how exercise affects the body and understanding why handwashing is essential for good health.

Year 3:

Year 3 have been working hard with new learning in both Writing and Maths. In Writing, they have been learning to write letters using past tense consistently throughout. Pupils are also writing letters based on Aesop’s fable, ‘The Mouse and Lion‘, pretending that they are the lion writing to children about the actions of the tiny little mouse. In Maths, we have started learning about fractions, comparing and ordering them. In Science, we are expanding our knowledge of rocks, weathering and erosion through handling different types of rocks and making observations about how they might have changed over time.

Year 4:

It’s been another exciting week in Year 4. We’ve continued our journey with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and it’s been so much fun reading aloud in a script-style, taking on the roles of the characters. The children are thoroughly enjoying bringing the story to life. In RE, we’ve been focusing on forgiveness in Christianity and are building a display to showcase our learning. The children have been working thoughtfully on this topic, and we can’t wait for everyone to see the finished display.

We’re also starting to share our half-termly projects. So far, we’ve had an amazing poster on chocolate production and a sweet invention from Thea that’s really impressed her class. A reminder for parents and carers: please encourage your child to hand in their projects by next week so we can celebrate all their hard work. Details for submission can be found on Google Classroom.

Year 5:

Year 5 are thoroughly enjoying their Science and Geography learning this term, and it’s been great to see their enthusiasm. In Geography, we have learnt about coastal features, and the impact waves have on coastal erosion. In Science, we enjoyed an experiment last week where we tested to see if our chemical change was reversible or irreversible. It was quite difficult getting the balloons on our bottles but lots of fun when they did blow up!

Year 6:

In Art, Year 6 have been exploring the works of the artist, Henri Rousseau, who was best known for his depictions of jungle scenes. Inspired by his famous painting Tiger in a Tropical Storm (Surprised!) (1891), the pupils created their own spectacular pieces using watercolours. They worked hard to exaggerate the size and outline of the leaves, before focussing on drawing animals in the foreground of their paintings.
