EYFS Parent Workshop

We are delighted to invite all our Nursery and Reception parents and carers to a special EYFS workshop on Wednesday 21st October at 9am.
This session will explore our Early Years curriculum, focusing on practical ways to support early reading, writing, and mark-making skills at home. We will demonstrate how we use Google Classroom as a digital floorbook – giving you a wonderful, live window into the learning taking place at school!
This is a fantastic opportunity to gather easy, actionable strategies to foster a love of reading at home and see exactly what learning looks like in our classrooms.
We look forward to seeing you there and partnering together to support your child’s learning and development!
Autumn Term Parent-Teacher Meetings

Our Autumn term Parent Teacher Meetings will take place on Thursday 22nd October 2026 for all classes. Year 1 will also offer some appointments on Wednesday 21st October.
We look forward to welcoming you and sharing your child’s progress.

Each appointment lasts 15 minutes, with the first five minutes set aside for you to look through, discuss and comment on your child’s work before meeting with their class teacher.
Please complete the feedback slip provided before your discussion with the teacher.
If you need any help booking through the Arbor App, please contact the school office team, who will be happy to help.
Extended School Day Club News

KS2 STEM Club:
This week, our budding scientists became Roman engineers as they designed, built and tested an aqueduct together! Inspired by Year 4’s classroom learning, the children explored an exciting challenge: could they build one giant aqueduct stretching the length of the art table?
They soon discovered that keeping the structure stable and getting the slope just right was trickier than expected. Through testing, observing and problem-solving, they strengthened the supports and adjusted the gradient to help the water flow.
Despite plenty of clever modifications, the water stopped just short of the end, but they came incredibly close! Every adjustment brought new learning, making this a fantastic afternoon of teamwork, perseverance and scientific thinking.
Attendance & Punctuality

Regular attendance is essential to every pupil’s success. At Burdett-Coutts, we place a strong emphasis on good attendance because being in school consistently supports wellbeing, friendships, a sense of belonging, academic progress and future opportunities.
Pupils who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve well, build strong relationships and develop the confidence, resilience and social skills they need for the future.
Even small amounts of absence can add up quickly. For example, 90% attendance is equivalent to nearly four weeks of missed learning over the course of a school year.
Our expectation is that all pupils achieve at least 97% attendance, and we are very grateful to families for working with us to support this.
- A reminder about punctuality: If your child arrives after the black gates have closed and enters through the school office, they will be recorded as late. A parent or carer will need to come into the office and register their arrival using the InVentry system.
- Late arrivals on assembly days: To avoid disrupting assembly, pupils arriving late will be safely supervised by an adult in the hall and asked to read their home reading book quietly until assembly has finished. Please make sure your child brings their home reader to school every day.
- Late arrivals – pupils who arrive late to school will miss their morning playtime that day, using that time to catch up on the 5,10 or 15 minutes of work they arrived late too. Parents, please help your children to be up and out of the house on time each day, ensuring you leave plenty of time for your daily commute. We hope to not see any pupils coming in via the school office after 08:45. (this means your on time!).
Thank you for your continued support in helping every pupil make the most of each school day.
Why Attendance Matters
Being in school every day helps pupils to:
- Build secure friendships and social confidence
- Develop teamwork and communication skills
- Support positive wellbeing
- Gain essential knowledge and life skills
- Broaden their understanding of the world
Here’s this week’s class attendance figures:
| Class | Attendance % |
|---|---|
| PreSchool | 83.7% |
| Nursery | 92.5% |
| Reception | 98.2% |
| Year 1 | 100% |
| Year 2 | 94.7% |
| Year 3 | 97% |
| Year 4 | 96% |
| Year 5 | 100% |
| Year 6 | 97.3% |
Out and About……

Y3 Trip to Gunnersbury Park Museum:
On Wednesday, Year 3 travelled back in time to become Stone Age explorers! The children examined artefacts from the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic eras, including a woolly mammoth’s tooth found in Chiswick. Alice took on the role of a careful archaeologist, showing the class a real flint hand axe.
Outside, our young hunter-gatherers built huts and took part in a pretend wild boar hunt. They then stepped into the Neolithic era, working together to build a house using wattle and daub. With the sun shining, there was even time to enjoy the playground before returning to school and the present day.
Could Year 3 survive by foraging for their own food? With requests for lunch starting at 10am, we’re not quite sure! What is certain is that it was a wonderful day of curiosity, teamwork and bringing history to life.

Winter Wonderland Art Competition
Biscuit’s Bytes

Woof…
Happy Friday, everyone! It’s hard to believe September has already flown by and October is here.
There’s been plenty happening in and out of the classroom this week. I was lucky enough to visit several classes and see some of the interesting, creative activities the children have been enjoying.
Playtimes have been a highlight too! I’ve loved seeing the children’s imaginative creations with the blue blocks and practising my football skills with Year 6 ⚽️ With no wet play this week (hurrah!), we’ve all made the most of being outdoors, running around and having fun with friends.
We also celebrated a special birthday for Mr Nuno, our school site manager, and even I got to taste some of the yummy cakes! A very happy birthday to him.
Have a lovely weekend, and see you all on Monday!

Community Corner

Week beginning 28 September 2026
This week in church, we learnt about St Michael and all the Angels. Graham began by asking what came to mind when the children heard the word ‘angel’. They shared some thoughtful ideas, describing angels as living in heaven with God and helping to bring goodness into our world.
We heard how St Michael fought against evil and cast the fallen angels out of heaven. Together, we reflected on the courage he showed in standing up for what is good and protecting others.
The children were encouraged to think about how they, too, can show courage and kindness, playing their part in making our world a better place.
Community Questions:
- I wonder if Moses humbly led the people?
- How do we know this?
Community Challenge:
- This week our job is to be good listeners, make kind and positive choices and help spread the word of God through the way we treat others.
Class Assemblies:
- 16th October: Year 1
- 06th November: Year 4
- 20th November: Year 2
- 4th December: Year 3
- 11th December: Year 5
Assemblies are from 09:00 – 09:25. Please arrive on time, as late entry can disrupt the children and the flow of the assembly. Photos must not be shared on social media.
School & PE Uniform:

Pupils are welcome to continue to wear their school summer uniform until the end of September. However, as the weather changes to more cooler and wetter patterns, all pupils will need to be wearing the Autumn/Winter School Uniform from the beginning of October, or sooner if they wish.
Please ensure that all pieces of school uniform are named.
Please ensure that your children are wearing the correct school uniform to school each day. It is important that all pupils are also wearing the correct school shoes – which are black shoes, and not trainers.
The Autumn/Winter term uniform options for pupils in Nursery to Year 6 are:
Girls:
- Dark grey trousers, skirt or skort
- Long-sleeve white shirt (Years 3 – 6)
- White school logo polo shirt (Nursery – Year 2)
- Tie (Years 3 – 6)
- V-neck navy school logo jumper (Years 3 – 6)
- Navy logo school sweatshirt (Nursery to Year 2)
- Blazer (Year 6 only)
- Plain black shoes (not trainers)
Boys:
- Dark grey shorts or trousers
- Long-sleeve white shirt (Years 3 – 6)
- White school logo polo shirt (Nursery – Year 2)
- Tie (Yers 3 -6)
- V-neck navy school logo jumper (Years 3 – 6)
- Navy school logo sweatshirt (Nursery to Year 2)
- Blazer (Year 6 only)
- Plain black shoes (not trainers)
On PE days, pupils must wear the school PE kit only.
This is especially important for safety. Having the correct shoes for physical activities, and clothing that is not restrictive, for completing physical activity are essential for helping us to ensure pupils complete all PE lessons safely.
The Autumn/Winter term PE kit for all pupils from Year Reception to Year 6 consists of:
- A school navy logo t-shirt
- Navy leggings, tracksuit bottoms or skort (no logos etc)
- Plain black trainers
- A school logo sweatshirt (not the v-neck jerseys for KS2 pupils. Sweatshirts are available from the school office in KS2 sizes).
Please note that pupils who do not have the correct PE kit will not be able to participate in their PE lesson. They will be given alternate work to do, and a note will be sent home highlighting why they were not able to complete their lesson that day.
We thank you in advance in supporting our school’s uniform policies.

Online Safety

Did you know that not all apps are safe for children, with many popular ones having certain age restrictions. For example, WhatsApp, Tik Tok, Instagram and Facebook operate a minimum age of 13+ years, and therefore primary school children should not have their own, nor access to, such apps or accounts.
As parents, you can help safeguard your children online by researching these apps and their purposes, as well as their age restrictions, BEFORE agreeing to download them. If you do choose to download them, remember that parental controls such as password protection, can be set up so that in-app downloads or purchases, cannot be completed by the children themselves.
For example, to prevent iTunes, Apple App Store purchases or downloads, all you need to do is:
- Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
- Tap Content & App Privacy Restrictions. If asked, enter your passcode.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Select a setting and set to Don’t Allow.
Tips on how to install parental controls on other apps and devices (Android or Apple) can easily be found online, or even from the app developers themselves.
Funding eligibility letter for Pupil Premium, Early Years Funding & Free School Meals

Due to changes in the eligibility criteria for Pupil Premium, Free School Meals and qualifying for 30 hours of funding for Nursery provision, many pupils currently enrolled at our school may now be entitled to one of these funding allocations.
We will be issuing letters to families who are currently not in receipt of the above, asking you to complete the registration for the identified funding option your child/ren maybe eligible for. Thank you so much in advance for your help in completing this.
This funding allows us to increase additional staffing hours to run booster groups, and an exciting range of extended day activities, that benefit our school and your child, and your cooperation is greatly appreciated at this difficult time for school budgets.
- If you should have any queries with regards to the letter sent to you, please contact Mrs Deary or the school office.
Preschool:

Preschool have been exploring Handa’s Surprise, sharing in the excitement as the animals sneak fruit from Handa’s basket! Building on their previous book, the children discussed the colours of different fruits and their favourites, baked banana muffins and made paper-plate giraffe faces. They have become enthusiastic storytellers, eagerly spotting each animal’s antics. Why not invite your child to retell the story at home? Try asking, ‘Who stole the banana?’ or ‘What fruit does Handa have at the end?’ Please remember to send in a family photo for our family wall. The children love seeing familiar faces in the classroom and sharing them with their friends. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed.
Nursery:

Nursery have enjoyed a busy week, growing in confidence as they explored Mr Gumpy’s Outing, created storyboards and retold the tale in their own words. During circle time, the children welcomed two new classroom friends, Jerrie Cat and Jigsaw Jenie. They showed them around, took turns playing with them and carefully returned them to their special spaces. A colour hunt also sparked plenty of excitement as the children spotted different colours in the classroom and outdoors. A special milestone was attending their first music assembly and church service. The children listened attentively and rose to the occasion. We are very proud of them!
Reception:

Reception have been growing in confidence as they practise writing their names, identifying the initial sound and recognising the letters in the correct order. They have also been working carefully on their letter formation. With help from their Story Friend, the Opening Owl, the children explored the beginning of their class story. Focusing on the questions ‘who?’ and ‘where?’, they identified the characters and setting, sharing their ideas through discussion and writing as they began to make sense of the story.
Year 1:

Year 1 are growing in confidence as independent writers! This week, they continued their work on Old Bear, moving from planning to writing the part of the story where the problem unfolds. The children practised saying sentences aloud and organising their ideas before writing, remembering capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. They also explored interesting vocabulary and exclamation marks to add excitement to their stories. It has been lovely to see their progress over the past few weeks, as they build the stamina and independence to put their ideas onto the page.
Year 2:

Year 2 have been putting their creativity to work! In art and design, the children explored tone and texture to create cartoon self-portraits. This linked with their PSHE topic, Being Me in My World, celebrating the unique individuals who make up our class. They have also been looking ahead to Christmas, making ‘Season’s Tweetings’ cards by transforming watercolour dots of different sizes into festive little birds. Each creation reflects the children’s care and imagination, and they can’t wait to share them with their families!
Year 3:

It’s been a wonderful week of history for Year 3! Alongside our class trip, which you can read about in a separate post, the children explored Stonehenge and historians’ ideas about why it was built. They learnt about the summer and winter solstices, marking the longest and shortest days of the year, before starting their own miniature Stonehenge models. We look forward to sharing their finished creations next week. In maths, we are nearing the end of our place value unit, and we’re very proud of the children’s progress this half term. They have also begun writing narratives inspired by The Iron Man, using similes and rhetorical questions to bring their stories to life.
Year 4:

Year 4 have been bringing imaginary worlds to life through their magical portal stories, using fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases and accurate speech punctuation to develop their writing. In maths, pupils began rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000, using number lines to help. They also linked their learning to history by exploring Roman numerals and practising converting them to and from modern numerals. An energetic afternoon of running races in PE gave everyone a chance to shine. The children showed great sportsmanship, cheering one another on and celebrating each other’s achievements.
Year 5:

Year 5 have enjoyed another busy week of discovery! In English, pupils completed their space journey narratives, imagining themselves as the Mars rover, Curiosity. In maths, they finished their place value unit, building confidence in rounding numbers up to one million. In RE, the class explored different gods and goddesses in Sanatana Dharma and how Sanatanis worship them. History lessons took pupils into Anglo-Saxon villages, where they compared daily life with that of the Romans. In PSHE, pupils explored why rules matter and considered rewards and consequences by creating a game with clear rules that everyone could take part in.
Year 6:

This week, Year 6 have continued their writing journey with One Day by Michael Rosen. By analysing a model diary entry, known as a WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like), pupils explored adverbials, informal language and the use of synonyms and antonyms, considering how vocabulary can convey a character’s experiences and create contrast. To prepare for writing from Eugène’s perspective, they took part in a conscience alley activity, using drama to explore his possible thoughts, feelings and fears. This helped them gather ideas and vocabulary to bring depth and empathy to their own diary entries.
